Amazing!
Review of One-Week Northern Lights Self-Drive Tour in Winter of South & West Iceland with Ice Caving

This was the trip of a lifetime! We saw many sights and covered a lot of ground. The Northern Lights were a bucket list item for me, and we were lucky to see them on the second night in Buðir. The hotels were great, and we had zero issues checking in. I do have a few suggestions: 1. Double check your itinerary. The first one we received had us driving from Höfn to Reykjavik (about 7 hours) and back in a day for the ice cave excursion. When I pointed it out, Guide to Iceland was very responsive and sent a corrected itinerary. 2. One of the sightseeing excursions was at Jökulsárlón, followed by our overnight stay in Höfn, about an hour further. The following day, we returned to Jökulsárlón for the ice cave excursion before our trip back to Reykjavik. This added some additional driving that we felt could have been avoided, especially since we had such a long day of driving to start with. Höfn was very charming, but a lot of places were closed, and we were too tired to really enjoy it. 3. The itinerary was full of amazing things to see, but we had to pick and choose, due to the limited daylight. There was not enough time to enjoy anything between Jökulsárlón and Reykjavik on our way back, due to the long drive. Overall, Guide to Iceland is a fantastic company to work with, and they did a great job putting together a memorable experience. I would highly recommend them.

How To Prepare for Winter Driving in Iceland

As with anywhere, driving in Iceland in winter requires a keen awareness of the road rules and potential hazards. With the right preparation and awareness, you can enjoy a safe and rewarding road trip in Iceland also during the colder months.

Here are the most important things to keep in mind before heading out on the roads in Iceland in winter:

Stay Updated on Weather Conditions

Iceland’s winter weather is highly unpredictable, with sudden snowstorms, icy conditions, and strong winds. Always check the weather forecast using trusted sources like vedur.is before setting out.

Check Road Conditions Before Driving

Iceland’s roads can become icy, snowy, or impassable during winter. Regularly monitor updates on road.is or safetravel.is to stay informed about closures, detours, or hazardous sections.

Choose the Right Vehicle for Winter Roads

A four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended for navigating Iceland’s winter terrain. These vehicles offer greater traction and stability on icy or snowy roads.

Practice Safe Winter Driving Techniques

Reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration. Use lower gears on steep descents, practice controlled steering on slippery roads, and follow general advice on safe driving in Iceland.

Always Use Your Headlights

By law, headlights must be on at all times, even during daylight hours, to ensure visibility. Many rental cars come equipped with automatic settings, but always double-check.

Plan for Fuel Stops in Remote Areas

Gas stations are sparse in remote areas, so always refuel when the opportunity arises, especially before heading into less-populated regions.

Winter in Iceland is cold but not as extreme as many expect, especially in coastal areas like Reykjavik, where average temperatures range from 23 F (-5 C) to 41 F (5 C). However, the wind chill can make it feel much colder, so dressing in warm, windproof layers is essential.

If you’re new to winter driving but still wish to explore, we recommend focusing on shorter routes like Iceland's South Coast. Remember to regularly check the weather forecast and road conditions for your intended route.
For a stress-free experience, we also offer guided tour packages around Iceland in mini-buses with English-speaking guides. Many of these guided packages take you through the most popular self-drive routes.
