Amazing!
Review of One-Week Northern Lights Self-Drive Tour in Winter of South & West Iceland with Ice Caving

This was the trip of a lifetime! We saw many sights and covered a lot of ground. The Northern Lights were a bucket list item for me, and we were lucky to see them on the second night in Buðir. The hotels were great, and we had zero issues checking in. I do have a few suggestions: 1. Double check your itinerary. The first one we received had us driving from Höfn to Reykjavik (about 7 hours) and back in a day for the ice cave excursion. When I pointed it out, Guide to Iceland was very responsive and sent a corrected itinerary. 2. One of the sightseeing excursions was at Jökulsárlón, followed by our overnight stay in Höfn, about an hour further. The following day, we returned to Jökulsárlón for the ice cave excursion before our trip back to Reykjavik. This added some additional driving that we felt could have been avoided, especially since we had such a long day of driving to start with. Höfn was very charming, but a lot of places were closed, and we were too tired to really enjoy it. 3. The itinerary was full of amazing things to see, but we had to pick and choose, due to the limited daylight. There was not enough time to enjoy anything between Jökulsárlón and Reykjavik on our way back, due to the long drive. Overall, Guide to Iceland is a fantastic company to work with, and they did a great job putting together a memorable experience. I would highly recommend them.

Tips for Planning an Airplane Tour in Iceland

Planning to explore Iceland’s stunning landscapes from the skies? Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your airplane tour experience:

  1. Schedule Your Airplane Tour Early in Your Trip: Airplane tours in Iceland are highly weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions affect visibility or safety. Booking your tour at the beginning of your trip gives you greater flexibility to adjust plans and reschedule for another day if needed.
  2. Check Departure Locations: Airplane tours in Iceland typically depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport, Skaftafell Nature Reserve in the southeast, or Akureyri Airport in the north. Select a departure point that fits your travel itinerary to avoid unnecessary travel time.

  3. Dress for the Weather: Wear warm, layered clothing, even in summer, as airplane cabins can often feel cold. For good photos, avoid wearing light-coloured clothing to reduce glare and reflection on the plane's windows.

  4. Check Tour Durations: Tours can range from 30 minutes to several hours. Check the included section for the tour's duration and what’s included to ensure the tour fits your schedule and expectations.

  5. Take into account the Season: The scenery in Iceland changes drastically with the seasons. Winter tours offer snowy landscapes, while summer tours showcase Iceland's colorful landscapes, and the extended daylight hours allow for longer airplane flights and a more flexible schedule.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to book an unforgettable airplane tour and experience Iceland’s incredible landscapes from a whole new perspective.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best airplane tour in Iceland?

One of the top airplane tours in Iceland is a scenic airplane tour over the Skeidararjokull glacier and the black sands of Skeidararsandur. This excursion costs around 329 USD.
Another of the best airplane tours is this breathtaking flight over Vatnajokull glacier from Skaftafell terminal. This tour costs about 154 USD.
Another highly-rated airplane tour is a sightseeing flight over Laki craters, glaciers, and the Highlands from Skaftafell. This excursion costs approximately 349 USD.

Are airplane tours in Iceland worth it?

Yes, airplane tours in Iceland are often considered well worth it by many travelers. The experience of flying over Iceland's diverse terrain is truly memorable and allows you to appreciate the country's beauty in a way that's impossible from the ground.

What is the cheapest airplane tour in Iceland?

One of the cheapest airplane tours in Iceland is an exciting airplane sightseeing tour over Lake Myvatn. This excursion costs around 198 USD.

Another cheap airplane tour in Iceland is an incredible 30-minute airplane tour of Vatnajokull national park. This tour costs approximately 212 USD and lets you see the Vatnajokull glacier from above.

Alternatively, this affordable personalised flight includes over an hour of sightseeing flying around Reykjavik in a flying buggy. This unique package costs about 286 USD.

What are the benefits of sightseeing from an airplane in Iceland?

Much of Iceland’s landscape is hard to access, such as the glaciers and the Highlands. You get a much better sense of the landscape from the air and are one of the lucky few partaking in a sightseeing tour rarely undertaken by visitors. For instance, many tourists chose plane and helicopter tours departing from Reykjavik to view the Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption.

Should I go sightseeing in Iceland in an airplane or in a helicopter?

More people can fit in a small airplane than in a helicopter, and airplane tours in Iceland are therefore more reasonably priced than helicopter tours. However, airplanes need a landing strip to take off and land, whereas helicopters can land anywhere and take off instantly, giving helicopter tours more freedom to explore. Helicopters can also hover over attractions whereas airplanes need to fly circles over them, meaning some photographers may prefer the experience helicopter tours in Iceland provide. However, plane tours in Iceland can be a great alternative to helicopter tours for those wanting a unique sightseeing experience for a good price.

How long do airplane tours in Iceland typically last?

The duration of airplane tours can vary, with options ranging from short 20-minute flights and average one-hour flights to longer excursions lasting a few hours. Tour operators offer various tour lengths to accommodate different preferences.

Are airplane tours narrated and will there be a guide on board?

Yes, airplane tours are often narrated by experienced pilots or tour guides who provide commentary and interesting facts about the sights you see during the flight.

Are airplane tours safe in Iceland?

Airplane tours in Iceland are generally safe when conducted by reputable tour operators with experienced pilots. Safety is a top priority, and the aircraft are well-maintained to ensure passenger safety.

Where are the main airports in Iceland?

The international airport in Iceland is in Keflavik, but many domestic airports and small airstrips are found all around the country. The main domestic airports are Reykjavik airport, where many plane tours in Iceland depart from, as well as Akureyri airport, Isafjordur airport and Egilsstadir airport.

Are domestic flights available all year round in Iceland?

Yes they are. All flights are connected through Reykjavik, and Egilsstadir, Akureyri, and Isafjordur have daily flights throughout the year. In the case of a weather cancellation, you will be rescheduled on the next available flight.

How long is the flight between Reykjavik and Akureyri?

Flying between Reykjavik to Akureyri takes approximately 45 minutes. If you are planning a trip to Akureyri, you may find our guide to Akureyri helpful.

What are the pros and cons of flying within Iceland?

You can significantly shorten the time between destinations by flying within Iceland. Flying between Reykjavik and Akureyri, for example, only takes 45 minutes but driving takes up to six hours with stops. Domestic flights in Iceland can also be an excellent way to reach more remote parts of the country when roads are closed or otherwise not ideal for travel. You also get to see the magnificent landscapes from an aerial view.

Can I be picked up from my Reykjavik hotel for a sightseeing airplane tour?

Domestic airlines do not offer pick-up services, but some sightseeing tours do. For example, this personalized 1.5-hour plane tour with sightseeing around Reykjavik begins with a hotel pick-up. The best way to get to the airport is to take a taxi if you are taking a domestic flight.

Do sightseeing plane tours leave from Keflavik International Airport (KEF)?

No, plane tours departing from Reykjavik will leave from Reykjavik Domestic Airport—not the international airport in Keflavik. Make sure not to mistake the two, or you'll almost certainly miss your flight.

Where is Reykjavik Domestic Airport?

Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RVK, and sometimes BIRK) is located by the city center. From downtown, it’s about a 30-40 minute walk, or a 5-minute taxi ride, to check-in. The address is Thorragata 10, 101 Reykjavik.

How long in advance do I need to check in for a domestic flight in Iceland?

You need to be at the airport no later than 45 minutes before your flight departs. If you are flying internationally from Reykjavik Domestic Airport (to Greenland, the Faroe Islands or Ireland) then be at the airport no later than 90 minutes before your flight. You should be at Keflavik International Airport two hours before your departure.

What types of aircraft are used for aerial tours in Iceland?

Aircraft used for airplane tours in Iceland can vary, but they are typically small and well-suited for sightseeing. These may include propeller planes or small helicopters, Cessna, flying buggies, and single-engined utility aircraft, depending on the operator and tour type.

Are airplane tours in Iceland suitable for individuals with motion sickness?

While motion sickness is generally less common on airplanes than other modes of transportation, it can still affect some individuals. If you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking motion sickness tablet or medication before the tour and sitting near the aircraft's wings, which tend to be the most stable area.

Are airplane tours affected by weather conditions in Iceland?

Yes, weather conditions can impact airplane tours. Iceland's weather can be unpredictable, and tours may be subject to delays or cancellations due to adverse conditions. Tour operators prioritize safety and may offer alternative dates or refunds in such cases.

What is the best time of year to book an airplane tour in Iceland?

The best time depends on what you want to see. Summer (June–August) offers colorful landscapes, longer daylight hours, and views of vibrant geothermal areas. Winter (November–March) provides the chance to see snow-covered landscapes. Tours run year-round, but weather conditions may vary.

Are airplane tours in Iceland suitable for people with limited mobility?

Yes, most airplane tours are suitable for people with limited mobility, as boarding is relatively simple. However, accessibility options may vary by operator, so it's recommended to email info@guidetoiceland.is in advance to find the best option for you.

Are airplane tours in Iceland suitable for children?

Yes, airplane tours are generally suitable for children. However, age restrictions may apply to some tours, and not all flights are ideal for very young children. Review the tour description for each airplane tour to check the minimum age requirements.

How many passengers are on an airplane tour?

Airplane tours in Iceland typically accommodate small groups of 4–6 passengers, depending on the aircraft. Private tours are available for those seeking a more exclusive experience.

What languages are spoken during airplane tours in Iceland?

Most airplane tours in Iceland provide commentary in English, but some operators offer guides fluent in other languages, such as German or French. Check the tour description for more information regarding languages.

What should I wear or bring for an airplane tour?

Wear warm, layered clothing, as airplane cabins can feel cold. Dark clothing helps reduce window glare for better photos, and a fully charged camera or smartphone and a pair of sunglasses are also recommended to reduce glare from the snow and ice. If you’re visiting Iceland in winter, consider bringing touchscreen-compatible gloves for easier phone use.

Can I see active volcanic eruptions on an airplane tour?

Yes, if there is an ongoing eruption while you visit Iceland, airplane tours that fly close to the eruption site are operating. These highly weather-dependent tours can fill up quickly, so booking early is recommended.
