Amazing!
Review of One-Week Northern Lights Self-Drive Tour in Winter of South & West Iceland with Ice Caving

This was the trip of a lifetime! We saw many sights and covered a lot of ground. The Northern Lights were a bucket list item for me, and we were lucky to see them on the second night in Buðir. The hotels were great, and we had zero issues checking in. I do have a few suggestions: 1. Double check your itinerary. The first one we received had us driving from Höfn to Reykjavik (about 7 hours) and back in a day for the ice cave excursion. When I pointed it out, Guide to Iceland was very responsive and sent a corrected itinerary. 2. One of the sightseeing excursions was at Jökulsárlón, followed by our overnight stay in Höfn, about an hour further. The following day, we returned to Jökulsárlón for the ice cave excursion before our trip back to Reykjavik. This added some additional driving that we felt could have been avoided, especially since we had such a long day of driving to start with. Höfn was very charming, but a lot of places were closed, and we were too tired to really enjoy it. 3. The itinerary was full of amazing things to see, but we had to pick and choose, due to the limited daylight. There was not enough time to enjoy anything between Jökulsárlón and Reykjavik on our way back, due to the long drive. Overall, Guide to Iceland is a fantastic company to work with, and they did a great job putting together a memorable experience. I would highly recommend them.

Those over 16 may operate sleds independently. Remember to always check the details of the individual dog sledding tour you are booking in Iceland.

Will I see Icelandic dogs on my sledding tour?

Although the Icelandic Sheepdog is a beloved breed, it is, as its name indicates, a sheepdog. They are better suited as farm dogs and are excellent sheepherders. Can we bring treats for the huskies?

In general, feeding and providing treats is left to the kennel staff. However, certain providers may allow you to feed the dogs cookies at the end of the tour. Any treats given to the huskies is at the discretion of the tour provider.

Do I have to be physically fit to participate in dog sledding?

Given the environment, dog sledding in Iceland can be somewhat demanding. Participants should be able to walk about a mile without becoming exhausted. Dog mushing is a sport and therefore requires physical participation. If you weigh over 100 kg (220 lbs), special arrangements will be made to accommodate you. In Iceland, dog-sledding is a rather new phenomenon and has recently gathered a lot of interest.
