Day 1
Guided 2 Day Small Group Tour of Iceland’s South Coast to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon - day 1

Day 1 - Waterfalls, Black Beaches and White Glaciers

You will be picked up in the morning by your friendly, local guide in a small but comfortable minibus. You will then be whisked out of the city where the countryside will greet you with mountains and wide open plains, as you travel east towards your destination.

Your first stop will be Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Falling from 60 metres, it flows over a cave in the cliff face, creating a wide space between the cascade and the rock which allows visitors to walk behind the watery veil of the falls. It is recommended popping on a raincoat before venturing back there to enjoy the unique view of the South Coast.

Travelling under the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier, you continue your journey to Skógafoss waterfall. A wider, more powerful cousin of Seljalandsfoss, this large sheet of water crashes down upon the black rocks below with a loud roar, painting an impressive scene for all who visit it.

After a quick stop for lunch, it’s time for adventure! You’ll head to the roots of the glacier Sólheimajökull, where you can roam around and explore this incredible area.

After experiencing the frozen, jagged landscape of the great glaciers, it is time to visit one of the most beloved sites in the country: the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. This ink-black stretch of sand, walled in by imposing, hexagonal basalt column cliffs, gives a sharp contrast between land and sea. Be careful not to go to close to the water, the area is notorious for sneaker waves that can suddenly rush upon the land.

At the end of the day, you will head further east, where you will reach your accommodation for the evening, near tomorrow’s highlight: the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

Day 2
Guided 2 Day Small Group Tour of Iceland’s South Coast to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon - day 2

Day 2 - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and return to Reykjavik

The day begins with a breakfast before you head out to visit the sometimes called Crown Jewel of Iceland: The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

This broad draining lake of deep blue glacial water offers the incredible sight of massive icebergs in great number floating all around, lazily turning and spinning in the dark waters. Crashing down from the glacier tongue Breiðamerkurjökull, the icebergs linger there before floating out to the sea and breaking in the violent surf just a short walk from the lagoon.

The results of this are the many scattered pieces of ice that wash up on the nearby coast, earning it the name the Diamon Beach, as the blocks resemble precious stones where they wash upon the ink black sands.

As if standing on the shores of this lagoon isn’t enough, you’ll be given a chance to see it up close on an amphibian boat tour. You'll head out onto the waters, sailing between the massive blocks of ice, that range in colour from stark white to iridescent blue.

As you sail, you might see some of the lagoon’s inhabitants; seals, birds, and even occasionally small whales make this place their home. Seals are naturally curious and tend to approach the boats if something catches their interest, so you might be in luck and get to see them up close in their natural habitat as you glide between the gargantuan icebergs, following them to the sea.

After this amazing experience, it is time to board the bus again and start the journey back to the city. During your drive, you will pass beautiful locations, and make stops at hidden gems along the way, which your guide will pick out each time to best suit both weather and seasons. There is near endlessness of beautiful sites to behold, so you will not be bored on your return trip.

You will reach Reykjavík Central in the early evening. It is not recommended that you do not make plans to fly home the same night as bad weather and delays could affect your journey. Have a stroll in the city and get to know Iceland's capital, Reykjavík.
