Description

Explore all the best the Icelandic winter wonderland has to offer. With this great value deal, you'll get two glacier hiking tours and an ice cave tour at a 10% discount. Those looking to experience Icelandic glaciers to the fullest can do so with these best-selling winter adventures.

If you plan to rent a car and explore Iceland's South Coast, then these three excursions are the perfect activities to add to your plan. Start by going glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier from the larger Mýrdalsjökull. The duration of the tour is 2.5 hours, so you'll have plenty of time left in the day to admire the stunning waterfalls in the area and the nearby black sand beaches.

Your second and third tours take place further east, as you'll go glacier hiking on Iceland's largest glacier Vatnajökull, from the nature reserve Skaftafell. There, you can expand your knowledge of these disappearing giants and compare the two glaciers.

After hiking on top of two glaciers and enjoying fantastic views over sandy plains and cracked ice fields, it's time to head inside the glacier to admire the shining bright blue ice that you can find inside a natural ice cave. Make the most of the Icelandic winter by exploring the country's glaciers inside and out! Check availability by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1
There's a short 10-15 minute hike from the parking lot to the edge of Sólheimajökull glacier.

Day 1 - Solheimajokull Glacier Hike

All three tours in this combo have both a morning and an afternoon departure. During the booking process, you can choose which one you prefer. That way, you can easily schedule these excursions to fit your vacation plans best.

However, we recommend that you choose an afternoon departure if you are staying at accommodations that are more than a 2-hours drive from the departure point, so you don't have to rush. You can always update your departure preference after booking if your plans change.

Start by exploring the views from the impressive Sólheimajökull glacier, found on Iceland's South Coast. There's a lagoon at the tip of this glacier tongue. As the ice cap is retreating, the lagoon is ever-increasing in size.

Drive to the Sólheimajökull parking lot, where you will meet your guides for the trip. They will give you crampons and a helmet and lead you on a short walk along the glacier lagoon to the edge of the glacier. There you'll fasten your crampons and start ascending the glacier.

You'll have around 1.5 to 2 hours on the glacier itself, learning about it from your guide and enjoying the spectacular views that extend from the nearby Mýrdalsjökull out to the black sand beaches.

Day 2
Snow covered surroundings on Svínafellsjökull glacier.

Day 2 - Skaftafell Glacier Hike

After exploring one glacier, it's time to head to the next. This glacier adventure starts from the Nature Reserve Skaftafell in southeast Iceland. You'll meet your guide by the Skaftafell information center before going on a quick drive to the edge of the glacier tongue, where you'll be briefed on the glacier you're about to tackle.

You'll be given crampons and a helmet, and then it's time to scale up the vast ice field with your expert guide. The hike itself takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and you'll be rewarded with fantastic glacial views. You might even get a glimpse of Hvannadalshnúkur, the country's highest peak.

Day 3
Natural glacier ice caves in Iceland have incredible blue colour inside.

Day 3 - Ice Caving in Vatnajokull Glacier

Sometimes it's good to save the best for last. After getting to explore Iceland's glaciers from above, today, you'll get to experience them on the inside.

You will meet your guide at the stunning Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. We recommend making sure you have some free time before or after your ice cave tour to fully enjoy the sights of the glacier lagoon and the nearby Diamond Beach.

Your guide will bring you along in a large, modified Super Jeep to the entrance of the ice cave. Natural ice caves are constantly changing, becoming larger or smaller, melting or freezing, and you'll be brought to the most impressive, accessible cave there is on the day of your tour.

You may have to bend down or crawl in some parts of the ice cave, so make sure you bring both waterproof clothes as well as something nice and warm to wear underneath. Good and sturdy hiking boots and warm socks will come in extra handy.

No matter the size or shape of the ice cave, you'll be guaranteed to see some spectacular blue ice while inside that will surely make a lasting impression.

Warm clothes (jeans are not recommended)
Rain gear
Camera

Good to know

Please note that this combo requires you to meet on location, meaning you will have to make your own way to the meeting point for each tour. The starting location for the first tour is at Sólheimajökull glacier, about a 2.5-hour drive east of Reykjavík. The starting location for the second and third tour is at Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón, about a 5-6 hour drive east from Reykjavík, so you'll need to book your accommodation in that area.

Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers if you visit in the winter. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.
