5 Day Guided Photo Tour of Iceland's South Coast in Winter
Description
Summary
Description
A winter photography workshop with a professional landscape photographer and a photo guide. The tour takes place in the south part of Iceland where you can find some of the most photogenic and famous photography locations in the country. In five days and four nights, you will be able to concentrate on improving your photography skills with the help of your landscape photography guide who will take you to all the best locations, some of them more than once. Your guide will help you improve your photography and video skills, learning and understanding your camera settings and giving you great tips and advice about compositions that you can practice in the field.
The photography locations on the South coast of Iceland start with a few waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss and Kvernufoss, and from there visiting Dyrhólaey peninsula with a great view to Reynisdrangar sea stacks and Reynisfjara black sand beach. From the small village of Vík we head east, exploring many well-known locations like Hjörleifshöfði, Eldhraun, Fjaðrárgljúfur, Lómagnúpur and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Jökulsárlón is known by most photographers in the world for its unique icebergs floating on the big glacier lagoon and the icebergs washing up on the beach in front of the lagoon. Vestrahorn mountain at Stokksnes and Eystrahorn mountain are among the iconic mountains in Iceland, great photo opportunities any day of the year. A part of this workshop is an early morning visit with a local glacier guide to the Ice-caves in Breiðamerkurjökull glacier which are unique to photograph.
On the way back from Jökulsárlón on day four we visit a couple of other glaciers, Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon which is less crowded than Jökulsárlón and Svínafellsjökull glacier where you can get close to the glacial ice. The last day is visiting the Golden Circle, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area with the famous Strokkur geyser and Thingvellir National park.
Northern lights hunting is a regular part of the workshop every night of the tour, depending on the weather conditions of course and the aurora activity.

We start the tour in the morning in Reykjavik at around 8-9 am and head out to the South coast. First destinations are a few waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss plus one or two more if the weather allows. The Dyrhólaey peninsula and Reynisfjara Black beach at the end of the day. Accommodation near Vík for the night.
Day 2 - Vík - Jökulsárlón
We start with a sunrise photo session near Vík and Reynisdrangar sea stacks before heading east towards the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. On the way there will be a few well known locations to visit, like Hjörleifshöfði, Skaftáreldahraun, Fjaðrárgljúfur and Lómagnúpur mountain, which you can see on the photo to the left. Our mission is to get to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before sunset.
Day 3 - Jökulsárlón - Vestrahorn
Starting again with a sunrise session on the beach at Jökulsárlón, a second chance to capture the icebergs lying on the black sand beach. After that we are heading to the ice caves with a local glacier guide, an extraordinary experience that every photographer should do. Coming back from the ice caves we head to Vestrahorn and Stokksnes for sunset, and hopefully some Northern lights.
Day 4 - Jökulsárlón - Hella
Our last day near Jökulsárlón starts with a morning session, the third chance of improving what you already captured and practicing slow shutter speed photography on the icebergs in the surf. After that we visit another glacier lagoon, Fjallsárlón which is not as crowded as Jökulsárlón. Now we start driving back to Hella, stopping at a few locations we did not stop on day 1 and 2, capturing the sunset at Dyrhólaey peninsula or the Black beach Reynisfjara.
Day 5 - Hella - Golden Circle - Reykjavik
On the last day of the tour we drive from Hella to Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden circle, capturing the sunrise and practicing long exposures. A few minutes drive from Gullfoss is the Geysir geothermal area with Strokkur geysir as the main player. Strokkur is very active, erupting every 5-10 minutes up to 20 meters. You can see Strokkur on the photo to the left. After visiting Strokkur we head over to Thingvellir National Park for our sunset location, exploring the historic site. Back in Reykjavik around 6-7 pm.
