Day 1 - Golden Circle
Today you will hop aboard a minibus and explore the wonders of the Golden Circle. This popular sightseeing route is comprised of Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. On this tour, you will also visit a few lesser-known attractions.
You’ll start at the birthplace of Iceland’s parliament, Þingvellir National Park. Aside from being the place where Viking settlers would gather and set the laws of the land over a thousand years ago, the park is mainly known for its geology. It is set in a rift valley, between two tectonic plates that are slowly drifting apart, which causes the landscape around to tear up and create countless cracks and fissures that traverse the area.
Next up is the waterfall Gullfoss. Meltwater from Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Langjökull, rushes forth before plunging into an ancient canyon, creating this majestic cascade in the process. You’ll surely be mesmerized as you watch this beautiful cascade from one of two observation decks while listening to the thundering noises of millions of liters hitting the bottom of the canyon.
The last stop on the Golden Circle route is the geothermal area of Geysir, home of bubbling mud pools, hot springs, and erupting geysers. Here you’ll see the geyser Strokkur explode in a large water column every few minutes. Keep your camera on hand! A selfie with Strokkur is an amazing souvenir.
Before you head back to Reykjavík, you will make a couple of more stops. One of which will be at the waterfall Faxi, a hidden gem most people overlook. Although it is not as big as Gullfoss, it is both beautiful and serene. Then, if you want, you will visit the 3000-year old volcanic crater lake, Kerið, most recognized by its azure blue water and fiery red walls.
You’ll return to Reykjavík in the evening. Please note that accommodations are not included with this tour combo.
Day 2 - Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Today, you’ll be picked up in the morning and driven to the beautiful Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often known as ‘Iceland in Miniature’ due to the wealth of attractions found there. You’ll be exploring beautiful beaches, dramatic coastlines, and charming villages while a majestic glacier watches over you.
Your first stop today is at the beach Ytri-Tunga. Unlike most Icelandic beaches, this one doesn’t have black sands, but white or golden. The view over Faxaflói Bay to the south is nothing short of magnificent, and you’ll also see the mountain ridges of Snæfellsnes all the way to the Snæfellsjökull glacier. You should also keep an eye out for some resident seals as they are known to lounge on the sands.
From there, you’ll stop at the small fishing hamlet of Arnarstapi to see its adorable houses and dramatic coastal view before you visit the black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur. To get to the beach, you’ll have to walk through a beautiful, natural maze of lava rock formations.
Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones might recognize your next stop, the arrowhead-shaped mountain Kirkjufell which can be found ‘North of the Wall’ in the show. The beautiful mountain and nearby waterfall is the perfect spot to capture amazing photos of the stunning Icelandic nature.
You’ll make a few more stops along the route where you’ll see just how diverse the Icelandic nature can be before returning to your accommodations in Reykjavík in the evening.
Day 3 - Katla Ice Cave
Wake up early this day and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime. Today, you’ll travel the beautiful South Coast of Iceland to the glacier Mýrdalsjökull where you’ll explore an authentic ice cave.
En route to the glacier, you’ll stop at the beautiful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which is fed by the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano glacier. The cascade falls over a concave cliff, and so you can follow a little path that leads you behind the falling springwater.
On the way to the glacier Mýrdalsjökull, you’ll travel over plains of black volcanic sands, and your guide will tell you about your surrounding environment as well as the legend of the witch Katla. Once at the glacier, you’ll put on crampons and a helmet, and the guide will lead you to the cave.
As you enter the cave, shimmering blue ice with dark strips of volcanic ashes will greet you. Inside, you’ll see otherworldly ice sculptures and glittering tunnels, providing you with some fantastic photo opportunities.
Once you’ve explored the cave to the fullest, you’ll return to your vehicle and head back to Reykjavík city.
What to bring
Good to know
The weather changes quickly in Iceland, so don't be caught unawares. It is always better to bring a sweater or dress in layers which you can remove if you are too warm.
Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers if you are visiting in the winter. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.
