Day 1 - Snowmobile Adventure on Langjokull Glacier
Make your way to Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden Circle sightseeing route. This beautiful cascade is fed by Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Langjökull, which you will visit today. From the parking lot at Gullfoss, you’ll meet your guide and board a large vehicle that will take you through the rugged Icelandic countryside to the snowmobile base camp.
Once there, you’ll be fitted with warm overalls, gloves, and a helmet. The guide will also give a lesson on how to operate your snowmobile. When you are all geared up and ready to go, you’ll mount your ride and begin speeding across the snow.
You’ll whiz across the slopes of Langjökull, racing across the powdery snow and zigzagging through the white expense while the adrenaline surges through your veins. After some time on the snowmobile, you’ll stop to take in the magnificent view of your surrounding frozen landscapes: the pure white hills and distant blue mountains.
After your ride, you’ll be taken back to Gullfoss waterfall, where you can continue with your trip around Iceland.
Day 2 - Katla Ice Cave in Myrdalsjokull Glacier
As you travel along the South Coast, make a stop at the village of Vík, located near the beautiful black sand beach of Reynisfjara. At Vík, you will meet your guide, who will take you on a ride on a super jeep to Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
Mýrdalsjökull is Iceland’s fourth largest glacier. Here, you will visit an authentic ice cave. The glacier sits on top of the volcano Katla. You don’t have to worry about Katla though, all volcanoes in Iceland are constantly monitored. However, you will see evidence of past eruptions on the way, like black, volcanic sands, and strange mountain shapes, and your guide will point those things out to you as well as tell you the legend of the Katla witch.
Once at the glacier, you will exit the vehicle, put on a helmet and crampons, and begin your short hike towards the ice cave. Due to the dark sand that surrounds you, the ice cave will seem like something out of a fantasy novel, like the entrance to hell or Mordor. Inside, however, are glistening ice walls of blue, white, and grey. Meltwater trickles down from the glacier at some places, and when the sunlight hits it, a beautiful rainbow will emerge.
After exploring the cave, you will return to the super jeep, head back to Vík village and be on your way to your next adventure.
Day 3 - Skaftafell Glacier Hike
Today, you’ll make your way to Skaftafell Nature Reserve, located in the beautiful Vatnajökull National Park, for an exhilarating glacier hike.
A stop at Skaftafell is a must for those traveling the South Coast as this is a beautiful area of stark contrasting scenery where black sands meet white glaciers. Visitors will find a wealth of natural attractions there, along with fantastic panoramic views. Today, you will get an even better view than most visitors as you’ll scale a glacier tongue of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull.
At the information center, you will meet your guide, who will take you on a short drive to the glacier tongue. Once there, you’ll be given all safety equipment and learn the basics of glacier hiking before heading out to the ice.
Once on the glacier, you’ll witness the stunning scenery of the glacier as you hike on top of the blue and white ice, which is streaked with black ash. Vatnajökull is part of the highest mountain range in Iceland so that you will have a great view of the beautiful Skaftafell area.
After enjoying the view and breathing in the crisp mountain air, you’ll begin your descent. Once back at the information center, you’ll bid farewell to the guides and continue your journey around Iceland.
What to bring
Good to know
The weather changes quickly in Iceland, so don't be caught unawares. It is always better to bring a sweater or dress in layers which you can remove if you are too warm.
Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers if you visit in the winter. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.
Please note that this combo requires you to meet on location, meaning you will have to make your own way to the meeting point for each tour.
