Description
Summary
Description
Discover top attractions along Iceland’s South Coast, from pristine waterfalls to mighty volcanoes and the famous DC-3 plane wreck. Travelers keen to explore diverse sights in a single day should book this 12-hour tour now.
Your sightseeing tour begins with a pick-up from your Reykjavik accommodation. Today you’ll enjoy a small-group experience with a maximum of 19 people to one guide.
After departing Reykjavik, you’ll visit three beautiful South Coast waterfalls, each spectacular in its own way.
Seljalandsfoss is unique for the path circling it. You can follow the trail behind the waterfall and take photos from all angles. Ensure you wear your waterproof gear to appreciate its beauty without getting wet!
Next, you’ll visit Gljufrabui waterfall. It’s close to Seljalandsfoss, although lesser known, perhaps because it’s hidden behind a cliff. This natural wonder tumbles 131 feet (40 meters) into a canyon, a stunning sight to behold. Take note that a trip to the Gljufrabui waterfall is only available from February to September.
The third waterfall on today’s agenda is the well-known Skogafoss waterfall, one of the country’s biggest and most awe-inspiring waterfalls. It falls from a similar height to Seljalandsfoss, around 197 feet (60 meters). However, its 82-foot (25-meter) width makes it extra mighty.
After marveling at these three incredible natural wonders, your group will visit the famous DC-3 plane wreck in Solheimasandur. The aircraft crashed in 1973, and amazingly, no one on board was injured.
The plane wreck site offers excellent photo opportunities, so ensure your camera is ready. The aircraft’s gnarled metal contrasts with the beach’s black sand amid a wild and desolate landscape, a picture-perfect scene.
The tour’s next stop is the Solheimajokull glacier and lagoon. Solheimajokull is part of the Myrdalsjokull ice cap and is known as being one of the most accessible glaciers from Reykjavik.
Solheimajokull is around five miles long and just over a mile wide (about eight kilometers long and two kilometers wide). Like most glaciers in Iceland, it’s rapidly receding, producing an ever-growing glacier lagoon at its base.
Katla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes, lies under the Myrdalsjokull ice cap. Though you won’t be seeing Katla, you’ll get to witness two other famous volcanoes: Hekla and Eyjafjallajokull.
Eyjafjallajokull volcano is famous for its 2010 eruption, which caused widespread havoc across European airports. Hekla is just north of Eyjafjallajokull and is known as one of the country’s most explosive and unpredictable volcanoes.
Another important stop is Dyrholaey cliffs, a breathtaking natural wonder that are part of the larger Katla Geopark and a testament to the country's geological diversity. The name "Dyrholaey" translates to "Door Hill Island" in Icelandic, which perfectly describes the most distinctive feature of this location—a massive natural archway carved by the relentless forces of wind and water.
This archway frames the picturesque view of the Atlantic Ocean and the stunning black sand beaches below, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts.
This epic tour finishes with a stop at the breathtaking Reynisfjara black sand beach. Reynisfjara is a must-see attraction with its dramatic sea stacks and giant basalt columns lining the shore, another superb location for nature and photography enthusiasts.
After marveling at some of the South Coast’s best attractions on this 12-hour excursion, your driver will take you back to Reykjavik.
Don’t miss the chance for an unforgettable full day of sightseeing along Iceland’s South Coast, with waterfalls, volcanoes, beaches, and a visit to the DC-3 plane wreck. Check availability now by choosing a date.
