Description

Add a little twist to your holiday with an exhilarating hike on top of a glacier. This tour will take you across the vast ice cap of Sólheimajökull glacier, past deep crevasses, freezing water cauldrons, and blue ice sculptures. It is the perfect tour for those traveling the South Coast and want to experience the sheer power of the Icelandic nature.

At the parking lot of Sólheimajökull glacier, you will meet your local glacier guide who will start by introducing you to your environment. Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull which is located directly on top of Mt. Katla, Iceland’s most powerful volcano. A short distance west is the infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano which last erupted in 2010.

After a 15-minute walk to the glacier itself, you will be fitted with all safety gear necessary for a hike on the ice, like crampons and an ice axe. Don’t worry; no prior experience is needed, your expert guide will teach you all how to use this equipment.

Then there is nothing left except to ascend the glacier. Your guide will lead you first past ash covered peaks, the aftermath of past eruptions of nearby volcanoes. You will then reach the pearly white surface of the glacier, but underneath is electric blue ice. You will be able to witness the colors of the glacier as you look down one of its bottomless crevasses, where bright blue ice turns pure white and then jet black.

On the top of the glacier, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of mountains, valleys, and the vast ice cap. You will marvel at the size of the glacier and hear nothing but the rustling sound of the ice as your crampons rub against it.

Don’t miss out on this excellent introduction to Iceland. Grab your hiking boots and breath in the fresh mountain air on the top of a glacier. Check availability by choosing a date.
