Description
Summary
Description
Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Iceland with a combined snowmobiling and glacier-hiking tour on the majestic Myrdalsjokull and Solheimajokull glaciers. Thrill-seeking travelers who want to spend more time on Iceland's incredible glaciers will love this exciting combo tour.
The adventure begins at the base camp for the snowmobiling excursion by the Myrdalsjokull glacier. Aim to arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. You'll meet your knowledgeable guide and the other travelers joining you on the snowmobiling tour.
This tour is a small-group trip, with a maximum of 16 participants on the snowmobiling excursion and 15 on the glacier hike. You'll have plenty of opportunities to ask your guides questions and enjoy a more hands-on experience.
On arrival, you'll receive a safety briefing for the snowmobiling section of the tour, and the guide will provide the safety gear you need. With a warm overall, a balaclava, and a helmet, you'll be ready to go.
Hop aboard a glacier truck (a modified 4x4 vehicle) and relax as you embark on a 30-minute off-road drive to the starting point. You can admire spectacular glaciers and mountain views as you travel.
At the start point, your guide will give instructions on how to drive the snowmobile, and then you'll be ready to set off. Feel the adrenaline rush as you zoom over the glacier, admiring the pristine white snow and towering peaks. Please note that a valid driver's license is required to drive a snowmobile.
After 90 minutes on the ice cap, you'll return to base camp in the glacier vehicle. Admire the glacier's impressive size before you make your own way to the Sollheimajokull base camp.
The other base camp is about 5.6 miles (9 kilometers) away. It's about a 10-minute journey, but there's an hour break between the tours, making this an excellent time to eat your packed lunch. Aim to arrive at the glacier-hiking base camp about 20 minutes before your departure time.
Check in for the glacier-hiking tour and meet the new glacier guide leading your hike. Solheimajokull is a glacier tongue extending from the larger Myrdalsjokull glacier — this hiking tour offers a fantastic opportunity to explore its icy terrain up close.
After another safety briefing, you'll receive the gear you need for the hike (crampons, an ice axe, and a harness). You're now ready to go.
The glacier hike lasts about 2.5 hours. You'll see deep crevasses, intricate ice formations, and fascinating ice tunnels. Feel the crunch of snow beneath your crampons as you cross the icy surface.
After the hike, you'll return to base camp and can continue your Icelandic adventure or head to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest.
