Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Landmannalaugar
Your tour starts at BSI Bus Terminal where your group will gather, before taking a public bus to Landmannalaugar. This journey will give you a taste of what is ahead, as you wind past mountains and volcanoes, most notably one of Iceland’s most explosive peaks, Hekla. You will reach Landmannalaugar at noon, have lunch, then start your hike.
The journey on your first day will be nothing short of spectacular. Landmannalaugar has many geothermal areas amongst its yellow, rhyolite mountains, forming an awe-inspiring landscape that is a pleasure to walk through. By late afternoon, you will reach the first of the mountain huts in which you will be staying, and there you can unwind in preparation for tomorrow’s hike.
Day 2 - Swan Lake and Glacier Views
The second day will take you to another fascinating geothermal area known as Jökultungur, where you can admire seething mud pools and steaming vents. You will have a beautiful view over Álftavatn, or 'Swan Lake', and the magnificent glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. You will hike in their direction before resting in another cabin.
Day 3 - Black Sand Deserts
You will come across two verdant volcanoes on the third day: the cone-shaped Stórasúla and the ancient Hattfell. Between these is a haunting stretch of black desert, called Mælifellssandur, which takes you to another world as you traverse across it. Before turning in for the night, you will head to the river Markarfljót and see where it takes a dramatic plunge into a deep canyon.
Day 4 - Emstrur
The fourth day brings you within a few hundred metres of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier as you hike through the gullies of the Emstrur area. As you travel, the vegetation will get denser and denser, indicating you are approaching the famed region of Þórsmörk valley.
Day 5 - Þórsmörk
You will have a better chance to explore Þórsmörk valley on the fifth day. The valley is in the shadow of three great glaciers and is thick with birch forests and wildflowers. It is interrupted by numerous streams and hiking trails.
One of these trails leads to Sönghellir cave, known as the song cave because of its unique echoing quality, and the other to the peak of Valahnúkur, where you can see moss covered cliffs, rivers, glaciers and volcanoes. You will enjoy one of these paths, before heading to the bus and returning to Reykjavík.
