Arrive at the café near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon at least 20 minutes before departure to exchange your vouchers for boat tickets. From there, you’ll board an amphibious vessel that smoothly transitions from land to water, making it perfect for exploring the lagoon.
Before stepping on board, you’ll likely be amazed by the sight of the lagoon from the shore. However, being on the water offers a completely different experience, surrounded by icebergs of various shapes, sizes, and shades of blue. The lagoon is formed by the melting Vatnajökull glacier, creating a surreal environment with a glacier tongue visible in the distance.
The boat tour lasts 30-40 minutes, providing plenty of time to take photos of this otherworldly landscape. An English-speaking guide will share insights about the lagoon’s formation, history, and future. You’ll even have the rare chance to taste ice that is estimated to be around a thousand years old.
As you explore, keep watch for seals. Many of these playful animals live in the lagoon, often swimming near the boats or resting on the icebergs. Their friendly nature makes it easy to observe and photograph them up close.
After the tour, you can visit Diamond Beach, where the icebergs drift ashore after reaching the ocean. The striking contrast of the glistening ice against the black sand is unforgettable and makes this area a favorite among visitors.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is considered one of Iceland’s most spectacular sights, and exploring it by amphibious boat is one of the best ways to fully appreciate its beauty. Choose your preferred date to check availability and book your adventure today.
