Description
Step inside the magical world within an ice cap with this fantastic ice caving tour at Myrdalsjokull glacier. Adventurers renting a car or private driver to explore Iceland will find this once-in-a-lifetime journey incredibly rewarding and should book while places last!
This experience begins at the base camp of Myrdalsjokull in South Iceland. Located just 103 miles (166 kilometers) from Reykjavik along the Ring Road, this ice cave is closer to the capital than any other.
The drive there is breathtaking, passing black sand beaches, geothermal areas, and waterfalls like the famous Skogafoss.
Once you arrive, you’ll meet your expert glacier guides, who will provide you with everything you need for a safe, informative, and exciting trip. They’ll also brief you on the journey before taking you to an extreme monster truck for your ascent to the ice cave.
These massive four-wheel-drive vehicles provide a thrilling start to this adventure. Their enormous wheels can handle the rocky road up to the glacier and the icy terrain once you reach it. The views of the surrounding snows, South Coast, and Highlands will be increasingly breathtaking the higher you ascend.
After around half an hour, you’ll reach the Askur ice cave on Myrdalsjokull glacier. Here, you’ll have a final safety check before stepping out of the vehicle and taking the short walk to the cave mouth.
Ice caves are spectacular phenomena that require specific conditions to form, making them rare around the world. Within, you can marvel over walls of snow, bright and colorful ice, and the many naturally formed chambers and corridors within.
The light filtering into the ice cave and reflecting off its surfaces provides mesmerizing views and incredible conditions for photography.
The path throughout the cave is largely flat and reasonably wide, and no climbing is required to navigate it. Thus, more guests can enjoy it than its more challenging cousins around the country.
To add even more excitement to this tour, the Askur ice cave is located near Katla volcano, one of the country's most active volcanoes. Do not worry, however, as it is safe to explore and closely monitored.
You’ll spend up to an hour marveling over the magic of the ice cave before your guide leads you back to the monster truck. You’ll then have an exciting descent in this all-terrain vehicle back to base camp.
After you have returned your equipment, you are welcome to carry on your day, whether that involves continuing along the Ring Road, further exploring the South Coast, or returning to Reykjavik.
Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore a magical ice cave close to Reykjavik with an added monster truck adventure. Check availability now by choosing a date.
