Skarðsvík Beach Travel Guide
A golden sandy beach found on the northwestern tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Skarðsvík is an exceptional, natural gem, even by Icelandic standards.
Explore this region on a tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
In stark contrast to the majority of black sand beaches in Iceland, Skarðsvík resembles a Mediterranean shoreline, enforced by its aquamarine, turquoise water and the surrounding dark, volcanic landscape. Visiting Skarðsvík is an excellent means of coming to terms with just how diverse Iceland's landscapes can be.
Be warned, the waves at Skarðsvík are renown for being aggressive, so be sure to stand far back from the waterline. It is recommended to visit the beach at low-tide in order to ensure safety. To access the beach, follow the main road of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Útnesvegur (Nr. 574), before turning west onto Öndverðarnesvegur (Nr. 579). This is a gravel road, but accessible to most vehicles, and is surrounded by incredible views of the peninsula itself.
