Laugavegur (Main Street) Travel Guide
Laugavegur is the main shopping street in Reykjavík, renowned for its boutiques, restaurants, and bars.
Laugavegur Street is Reykjavik's main shopping and cultural artery, bustling with activity, art, and a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes. It’s one of the oldest streets in the city, and today it's a must-visit for locals and visitors looking to experience Reykjavik’s unique charm.
In addition to exploring Laugavegur, there are several nearby streets and paths that add depth to the experience and are well worth exploring. Hverfisgata runs alongside Laugavegur, but the smaller connecting streets also offer charming spots such as Skolavordustigur, Klapparstigur, Ingolfsstraeti and more.
The street can be explored on a guided shopping tour, which will allow you to learn more about its history and the best places to shop with a local guide. If you rent a car, you won’t be able to drive all the way down Laugavegur, as a section of it is designated for pedestrians only. However, there is plenty of parking around.

Laugavegur in Reykjavík
Laugavegur is one of the oldest streets in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, and was properly constructed in 1885. Its name roughly translates to ‘the Water Road’, as it was up and down this area where women used to bring their laundry to be washed in the hot pools.
The road begins in the east near the Kringlan Mall and the town’s largest park Laugardalur, and runs west to Bankastraeti, which leads into the downtown area. It is about two kilometers (just over a mile) long.
The popular shopping stretch of the street starts at the city’s former bus center and Reykjavik's first food hall, Hlemmur, and continues to Bankastraeti; west of here is the economic district.
What to do on Laugavegur
Laugavegur in Reykjavik is one of the city’s most vibrant and popular streets, packed with things to do. It is lined with colorful murals and street art, giving it a creative and vibrant atmosphere.
Taking a stroll along Laugavegur offers plenty of opportunities to discover art pieces and capture some fantastic photos. The street is home to a wealth of shops, restaurants, and bars, all appealing to different tastes. In terms of museums, it has just one...the tiny but fascinating Punk Museum!
Shopping in Laugavegur
When it comes to shopping, Laugavegur is filled with high-end boutiques, many featuring Icelandic-designed and locally produced products. One standout is 66°North, Iceland’s iconic brand for quality outerwear. Their flagship store is located on Laugavegur 17.
Alongside these boutiques, there are numerous shops offering a wide range of souvenirs like fridge magnets, books, stuffed animals, and other memorabilia. While the boutiques are widely appreciated, the tourist shops sometimes receive criticism for items like polar bear teddy bears—often purchased by visitors unaware that polar bears aren't native to Iceland.
For those seeking stylish clothes and unique jewelry on a budget, Laugavegur also has several second-hand and vintage stores worth exploring.
Food and drinks
There are several food and drink tours you can book to guide you through the local flavors, but you can also explore the city’s culinary scene independently.
Start your day by grabbing a coffee at Te og Kaffi to fuel up before diving into everything Laugavegur has to offer. This bustling street is a haven for food lovers and those in search of a good drink.
For a memorable dining experience, make your way to Kol Restaurant on Skolavordustigur. Known for its lively atmosphere and diverse menu, Kol draws inspiration from all over the world, creating an exciting blend of flavors that keeps patrons coming back for more. Here, you’ll enjoy a creative dining experience that isn’t tied to any one tradition but celebrates a fusion of culinary styles.
For a more laid-back vibe, head to the cult-classic, film-inspired Lebowski Bar, where you can enjoy a tasty, affordable selection of diner-style dishes during the day. As the sun sets, the bar transforms: DJs spin tunes, live sporting events or classic film screenings keep the energy high, and by the weekend, it morphs into a vibrant nightclub known for 80s hits and a lively dance floor.
Nearby, you’ll find an array of other beloved bars, including Kaldi Bar, Den Danske Kro, The Irishman Pub, and Kokteilabarinn—the go-to for fun, flavorful cocktails.
The dining options along Laugavegur are equally enticing, with a diverse mix of Icelandic and international cuisine. Fusion restaurants bring creative twists, and for those following plant-based diets, vegan-friendly options are widely available, with some restaurants fully dedicated to vegan fare and others featuring accommodating menus.
