Review of Project Car Rental

Super easy to retrieve car and keys! Easy to drive as well- good and reliable car for the duration of our journey. Just make sure to set the key collection time correctly as the key safe will not open one minute before said time!

Review of Blue Car Rental

Great service, great car & great price! Trifecta 5 star win! The personnel at the airport guided us patiently & efficiently thru the pick up process upon arrival, which was at 6:30 am! We dropped up the car I. The city of Reykjavik, which was super convenient & saved me another 2 days of rental cost.the personnel there was also great, telling us where to quickly go to fill up the tank ( less than a minute from the drop off office). We pushed the keys through the key drop “mailbox “ which as with everything, was perfect! Would 100% recommend!

Review of A Car Rental

I recommend this car rental! Already before our arrival we had received very clear indications on which was the meeting point at the airport. Once we got on the shuttle, after 4 minutes we reached the office where we did all the paperwork and our car was already warmed waiting for us

Amazing!
Review of Golden Circle Car Rental

We thought the rental company was located at the airport, they were not. There was also confusion about pickup. We had to call 3 or 4 times from the airport before the shuttle from the company arrived for us. The car we were issued had 287224 KM or 178472.72 miles on the odomiter. It had a great deal of rust and body damage. I doubt the validity that it was a 2023. The staff working at the rental agency were helpful and did issue us a portable WiFi device. It made our trip much more manageable. The return of the car was quick and no hassle. They also got us back to the airport timely.

Renting 4WD & SUVs in Iceland: What to Know

Renting a car and planning your own adventure is one of the best ways to experience Iceland. Choosing the right vehicle for your trip depends on the season, the areas you plan to visit, and the type of adventure you're after. A 4-wheel drive (4x4) or SUV is ideal for those planning adventurous self-drive tours to explore remote areas or wanting to drive in Iceland in winter.

4x4 cars and SUVs are built to handle rough roads and provide stability, particularly in Iceland’s Highlands, where regular vehicles can't go. These cars offer more space for passengers and luggage, making them perfect for long drives, whether you're touring popular areas like the Golden Circle, completing the whole Ring Road, or venturing into remote regions.

Keep in mind that driving a 4x4 can be different from a smaller car, as they’re heavier and have a higher center of gravity. Drive carefully, especially on tight turns and bumpy roads, and adjust your speed for the conditions.

Types of 4x4s or SUV to Rent in Iceland

Iceland has many 4x4 rental options, and you can choose based on your needs:

- Compact SUVs like the Suzuki Jimny or Dacia Duster are good for solo travelers or couples. These cars are affordable and fuel-efficient and work well on gravel roads, but they may not have enough space for larger groups or lots of luggage.

- Mid-sized SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 are great for small families or groups. They offer comfort, space, and good off-road ability for the Ring Road and the easier F-roads (mountain roads with no river crossings). These are good options for driving in Iceland in winter.

- Larger SUVs or Rental Jeeps, like the Toyota Land Cruiser, are best for more challenging trips. These vehicles are good for tough conditions, such as on Highland roads with river crossings or when driving around Iceland in winter.

Pick the right vehicle based on how many people you are traveling with, your itinerary, and the type of roads you will be driving on.

Where to Rent a 4x4 or SUV in Iceland

Renting a 4x4 or SUV in Iceland is straightforward, with options available across the country to suit various travel plans. The most convenient pick-up location for many travelers is Keflavik International Airport, as you can start your adventure as soon as you land in Iceland.

You can also book an airport transfer and pick up a rental car in Reykjavik. It's a good option for those spending time in Iceland's capital before heading out for a road trip, so you don't have to navigate the city streets in a larger car.

Rental cars are also available in larger towns around Iceland, like Akureyri in North Iceland and Egilsstadir in the Eastfjords. Some rental companies also offer the option to pick up your vehicle in one location and drop it off in another for a price, allowing for a more flexible itinerary.

Driving in Iceland: What to Know

To rent a car in Iceland, the minimum age is usually between 18 and 21 years old, though it can be higher for larger cars. You'll need to have at least one year of driving experience and must have a valid driver's license written in the Latin alphabet. Otherwise, you need an international driving permit.

Driving in Iceland requires preparation and awareness due to the country’s unique road and weather conditions. Travelers should check road conditions and the Icelandic weather forecast regularly on road trips, especially before heading onto F-roads. Also, keep an eye on the Safe Travel website for information on any unsafe conditions.

Basic driving rules in Iceland include driving on the right side of the road, keeping headlights on at all times, and ensuring all passengers wear seat belts. Roundabouts in Iceland are different, too, as cars in the inner lane have the right of way, and cars in the outer lane must stop to let them exit. You can't change lanes inside a roundabout.

Speed limits in Iceland are lower than in many countries. The highest speed limit is 90 km/h on the Ring Road and 80 km/h on main roads within Reykjavik. Otherwise, it's 50 km/h and lower in towns and 60 km/h on gravel roads.

There are more things to consider before heading out for a road trip in Iceland, so we recommend reading our guide to driving in Iceland to prepare for your adventure.

Rental Car Insurance in Iceland

When renting a car in Iceland, a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is usually included as it's mandatory in Iceland, but you can add extra coverage like Super CDW (SCDW), Gravel Protection (GP), and Sand and Ash Damage (SAAP/SADW) for more security.

Gravel Protection is particularly recommended if you're driving around Iceland, where rough, gravel roads can cause damage. Keep in mind that insurance plans involve self-risk, meaning you're responsible for damages up to a certain amount, which will be outlined in your rental agreement.

CDW/SCDW doesn’t cover tire or undercarriage damage, which can occur on rough roads. Towing fees aren't included, so you’ll be responsible for any towing costs. Also, wind damage to doors usually isn’t covered, so be sure to hold on to your car door when getting in or out in windy conditions!

During winter in Iceland, cars are equipped with winter tires by law, and you can request studded tires, subject to availability. Lastly, wildlife damage is generally not covered by insurance. During summer, sheep often wander near the roads in Iceland, so make sure to drive cautiously, especially in rural areas.

Ensure that you understand the insurance details and verify coverage options to avoid unexpected costs during your adventure in Iceland.

Roads in Iceland

Iceland has different types of roads, including paved highways, gravel roads, and mountain roads. The Ring Road (Route 1) goes around the island and connects many main attractions. It is a good road to drive on year-round, but winter weather can sometimes cause temporary closures, so always check the weather before driving. It has the highest speed limit in Iceland, 90 km/h or 60 mph.

Gravel roads are also common in Iceland, often leading to smaller towns and remote beautiful places. They can be bumpy, so drive slowly and carefully. The maximum speed limit is usually 60 km/h, but you may need to drive slower as they can be tricky to navigate. At high speeds, the gravel can act like an icy surface.

F-roads are rough mountain roads that take you into Iceland's remote Highlands. These roads are only open in the summer (from June to September) and can only be driven by 4x4 vehicles. F-roads are hard to drive, with steep slopes, loose gravel, and occasional river crossings that are only accessible to large vehicles. You can learn more about them with our guide to Icelandic mountain roads.

Be aware that off-roading is strictly forbidden in Iceland due to the country’s delicate ecosystem. Driving off marked roads can cause irreversible damage to vegetation and landscapes and is punishable with heavy fines. Always stick to designated roads and trails and respect Iceland’s nature by following local regulations, even in remote regions like the Highlands.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular 4WD vehicles and SUVs to rent in Iceland?

Popular smaller 4x4 rental cars include the Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny, which are ideal for couples or solo travelers.
For medium-sized options, the Toyota RAV4 and Kia Sportage are favorites, offering comfort and space for families.
For more challenging trips, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a top choice for its performance on F-roads and in rough conditions.

Do I need a 4WD in Iceland?

Renting a 4WD vehicle or SUV in Iceland is highly recommended for safety and accessibility. In summer, a car with four-wheel drive is required to access Iceland's Highlands, where rough terrain and river crossings make regular vehicles unsuitable.
In winter (October to March), a 4WD is a safer option, no matter whether you're traveling on normal roads in Reykjavik or heading out to the countryside. This is due to the ever-changing nature of Icelandic weather, such as snowstorms or icy road conditions.
Always choose a vehicle that matches your itinerary and the season. For further advice, consult our guide to rental car sizes in Iceland.

What do I need to rent 4x4 or SUV's in Iceland?

Most 4x4 car rental agencies in Iceland have an age limit of between 18 and 21 years old, though it can be higher depending on the vehicle.
You'll need to have at least one year of driving experience and have a valid driver's license written in the Latin alphabet. Otherwise, you'll need an international driving permit.

What is included in my 4x4 rental in Iceland?

All cars come with unlimited mileage and CDW insurance, which is in line with the law in Iceland. The CDW insurance covers damages the renter might cause to other vehicles and items. It also compensates for harm to individuals but does not cover damages to the rental vehicle.
Some rental companies may include things like additional insurance and WiFi, so make sure to compare your options to find the best fit for your trip.

What types of insurance are included with my 4x4 or SUV rental in Iceland?

Rental cars in Iceland typically come with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance, as it's mandatory in Iceland. It covers damages to third-party vehicles or property in case of an accident. However, CDW insurance does not cover all damage to the rental vehicle itself.
Check your rental agreement for specific coverage details, as some companies may include additional insurance options.

What additional insurance can I get when renting a 4x4 or SUV in Iceland?

While CDW insurance is included, we recommend considering additional insurance options for extra protection when renting a car in Iceland:
Super CDW - A higher level of CDW that reduces your excess payment in case of damage.
Gravel Protection - Covers damage to the car's paint and windshield caused by gravel or stones, which is common on Iceland’s gravel roads.
Sand and Ash Protection - Protects against damage from sandstorms and volcanic ash, which is especially important for traveling in certain areas of Iceland, like the Southeast.
Theft Protection - Covers theft of the vehicle or its contents.

Is there insurance for driving on Iceland's F-roads?

While CDW insurance covers standard driving, driving on F-roads or Highland roads often requires a special agreement. Not all vehicles are insured for these roads, and damage caused while driving on F-roads could void your insurance. For example, damage from river crossings is usually not covered.

Can I add additional drivers to my 4x4 or SUV rental in Iceland?

Yes, most rental companies allow you to add additional drivers, sometimes for a fee. The additional drivers must meet the same requirements as the primary driver.

Can I rent GPS navigation or Wi-Fi devices with my 4WD or SUV rental?

Yes, GPS navigation and portable Wi-Fi devices are available as optional add-ons from most rental companies. Be sure to request them when booking to guarantee availability.

Can I rent child seats with my 4WD or SUV rental in Iceland?

Yes, most rental companies in Iceland offer child seats as optional extras for an additional fee. These should be requested in advance to ensure availability, especially during the peak travel season of summer.

Are 4WD vehicles suitable for driving year-round in Iceland?

Yes, vehicles with four-wheel drive are designed for all seasons. They provide better traction on snowy or icy roads in winter and handle gravel and uneven terrain during summer, making them ideal for exploring Iceland year-round.

What sort of cars are considered 4x4 or SUV’s?

Cars considered 4x4s or SUVs are designed with elevated ground clearance, offering better traction and handling on rough terrain like gravel roads or snow.
SUVs can be 4WD (four-wheel drive), AWD (all-wheel drive), or 2WD (two-wheel drive).
4x4 vehicles can also suit different situations, so make sure to compare your options carefully and choose a vehicle based on your travel needs.

Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle at the airport in Iceland?

Yes, many rental companies operate from Keflavik International Airport (KEF Airport) and Reykjavik Airport, making it convenient to start your trip immediately.

Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle in Reykjavik?

Yes, there are many Reykjavik car rentals available, so you can easily pick up a 4x4 vehicle in Iceland's capital. It's a convenient option if you’re staying in Reykjavik before starting your road trip.
Be sure to confirm the pick-up and drop-off locations when booking your vehicle.

Can I return my 4x4 or SUV rental to a different location in Iceland?

Yes, many rental companies in Iceland allow you to return your vehicle to a different location for an additional fee.

Can 4x4 vehicles drive on Iceland's F roads?

Yes, the only way to drive on Iceland's F roads is with a 4x4 vehicle. These roads lead to Iceland's remote Highlands and are only accessible during the height of summer. The F stands for "Fjall," the Icelandic word for mountain.

Are all 4x4 vehicles suitable for F-roads?

No, while 4WD capability is required for F-roads, not all 4x4 vehicles are equipped for the rough terrain, steep slopes, or river crossings in Iceland's Highlands.
Always verify your vehicle’s suitability and specifications before renting. Driving an unsuitable vehicle on F-roads can be dangerous and may void your insurance.

Can I drive around Iceland with a 4x4 car?

Yes, a 4x4 is an excellent choice for driving around Iceland, whether you're exploring popular routes like the Golden Circle and Ring Road or venturing into remote areas.
A 4x4 provides better traction and stability on Iceland’s varied terrain, including gravel roads, icy winter conditions, and challenging F-roads in the Highlands.
However, not all 4x4 vehicles are suitable for every road, so make sure your car can safely navigate the paths you want to explore.

Can I sleep in my rented 4x4 or SUV in Iceland?

Some SUVs and 4x4 vehicles are modified for camping and sleeping, but this must be stated in the rental agreement. Regular vehicles are not designed for overnight stays.
For the best experience, book a 4x4 vehicle with a rooftop tent, a popular camper rental choice.

What should I do in case of an emergency or breakdown while driving a rented 4WD or SUV in Iceland?

If you experience a breakdown, contact your rental agency immediately. Iceland’s emergency number is 112.
Also, regularly check the Safe Travel website for real-time road and weather updates. Keep a phone with good coverage and carry basic emergency supplies like water, snacks, a flashlight, and warm clothing.

What should I do if I accidentally damage the rental vehicle in Iceland?

Contact your rental company immediately to report the damage and follow their instructions. Refer to your rental agreement to understand your liability and coverage.

What should I do if my rented 4x4 or SUV breaks down on an F-road?

Contact your rental company immediately and provide your location. Be prepared for delays, as assistance may take longer in remote areas. In case of emergency, call 112, the Icelandic emergency number.

Do I need a 4WD in winter?

While not mandatory, we highly recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive vehicle if you travel to Iceland between October and March. Even if you stay on main roads, it’s safer than a smaller and lighter 2WD car.

Do jeep rental vehicles in Iceland have tire chains?

Your rental vehicle will not have tire chains. However, after November 1st, all rental vehicles in Iceland are provided with winter tires, and you can request studded tires, though this will depend on the car hire agency and availability.

Are fuel costs higher for 4x4 and SUV vehicles in Iceland?

Yes, fuel costs are generally higher for 4x4 and SUV vehicles due to their larger engines and greater fuel consumption. Keep this in mind when planning your trip.

How does fuel payment work at gas stations in Iceland?

Most gas stations in Iceland are self-service and usually require a credit or debit card with a PIN. You can also purchase prepaid fuel cards at some stations.
