Immerse yourself in Reykjavik’s True Spy hideout, conveniently near Reykjavik’s harbor. Visitors should make their way to the lecture theater, ready to learn about the life of Icelander-Canadian Sir William Stephenson.
An experienced and engaging storyteller narrates the story. Throughout the 65-minute presentation, a major question will be on the tip of your tongue - “Was James Bond Icelandic”?
Stephenson was the son of Icelander Gudfinna Sigridur Stanger. After her husband died of chronic illness, Gudfinna couldn’t support her young son William. Her circumstances forced her to flee Winnipeg, Canada, with her daughters and leave her son William in the care of Vigfus and Kristin Stefansson (Stephenson).
Over the next hour, you’ll hear the life story of Sir William Stephenson. Find out how this remarkable man had connections to British leader Sir Winston Churchill, author Roald Dahl, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States.
You’ll also learn about Stephenson’s extraordinary service to WWII, for which he was knighted into the order by King George VI. Sir Winston Churchill recommended Stephenson for knighthood, stating, “This one is dear to my heart.”
British writer Ian Fleming is best known for his James Bond series of spy novels. In 1962 he wrote, “James Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is … William Stephenson”.
James Bond fans won’t want to miss the chance to discover the inspiration behind the famous series. The name James Bond is renowned in households around the globe, yet Stephenson is little-known, making this experience a must for curious minds.
You’ll enjoy a small-group experience with up to 12 visitors in the lecture theater. The session is held in the True Spy cellar, which will soon house an exciting escape room adventure.
Due to the lecture room’s central location, travelers are in the perfect position to explore Reykjavik’s attractions before and after their visit.
