Description

Step into a transformative three-day hiking tour in the Thorsmork Nature Reserve, designed exclusively for women adventurers. This guided summer tour in Iceland, inclusive of meals and mountain hut accommodations, invites you to explore Iceland’s most stunning landscapes in the most empowering environment.

Your journey begins at Reykjavik’s BSI bus terminal, where you’ll board a highland bus that transports you through scenic countryside to the trailhead in Thorsmork. The ride offers stunning views of Iceland’s rugged terrain, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.

For three days, your small group of women hikers will conquer the breathtaking Thorsmork. This nature reserve, steeped in Norse mythology, is named after the god Thor. It’s a sanctuary of diverse terrain, fertile valleys, glacial rivers, towering peaks, and dramatic canyons.

Each day features guided hikes lasting three to six hours, depending on the group’s pace. One highlight is Valahnukur mountain, where a short but steep ascent rewards you with panoramic views of Thorsmork and its surrounding areas.

The Tindfjallahringur trail offers a more extended loop with varied terrain, leading you through lush vegetation and volcanic ridges. You’ll also traverse the Rettarfell mountain, a less-traveled path with incredible vistas and serene moments away from the crowds.

Each day brings a new perspective, from crossing glacial streams to standing atop ridges with sweeping views of Thorsmork’s rugged charm. The slower elevation changes and well-marked trails make this adventure suitable for a range of fitness levels, though the terrain will still challenge and reward your spirit of adventure.

Accommodations for the tour are in the charming Basar mountain huts, where you’ll share dormitory-style sleeping arrangements with fellow hikers. These cozy huts provide a comfortable retreat after a day of exploration and have basic shower facilities.

All meals during the trip are included and carefully prepared to cater to most dietary needs, ensuring you stay energized for the challenges and joys of the trail.

What makes this summer hiking tour unique is its focus on fostering a women-led, women-only experience. Guided by experienced female adventurers, this journey is about more than hiking. It’s also about building community, sharing stories, and supporting one another in the heart of Iceland’s wilderness.

Whether scaling a steep trail or pausing to take in the beauty of a glacial valley, you’ll find camaraderie and inspiration in the shared adventure.

Day 1 - Reykjavik to Thorsmork and Basar Hut

Your summer adventure begins at the BSI bus terminal in downtown Reykjavik, where you’ll meet your guide and board the highland bus to Thorsmork.

The scenic drive covers roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) along South Iceland. The road passes through farm valleys, charming towns and villages, and occasional crossing of glacial rivers winding through Iceland’s dramatic terrain.

Your destination is Thorsmork, the final point of the world-famous Laugavegur trail. Thorsmork is a nature reserve famous for its lush valleys, Birch woodlands, stunning mountains, and surrounding glaciers.

Upon arrival, your group will settle into the cozy Basar mountain hut. This dormitory-style accommodation will be your base for the next three days.

After a delicious lunch at the hut, lace up your boots and prepare your hiking gear for the hike to Valahnukur mountain.

This relatively easy trail climbs to roughly 980 feet (300 meters) and offers spectacular panoramic views of Thorsmork’s ridges, glaciers, and valleys. From the summit, take a moment to soak in and photograph the scenery, including the other mountain huts and campsites dotting the landscape.

Then, your guide will lead you to descend into the serene Husadalur valley, a lush area framed by dramatic peaks, before continuing toward Langidalur. Here, you’ll have the chance to explore the Snorrariki cave, a unique feature steeped in local legend.

The trail to the cave is well-marked and accessible, providing an adventurous yet manageable challenge. You’ll hear exciting stories and folklore about these locations from your guide to enrich the experience.

As the day winds down, follow the trail back to Basar, where a warm dinner awaits. Relax and recharge in the welcoming mountain hut, enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow hikers.

With approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) covered and plenty of opportunities to admire Thorsmork’s dramatic scenery, your first day sets the tone for an exciting and rewarding adventure.

This introduction to Iceland’s wilderness will leave you eager to explore more of Thorsmork’s trails and hidden gems for the next two days.

Day 2 - Exploring Thorsmork’s Tindfjallahringur Hiking Trail

Start your morning at the Basar hut with a hearty breakfast and a short stretching session to prepare for an inspiring day. On day two of your multi-day hiking in Thorsmork, your group will focus on the Tindfjallahringur trail.

With lunch and snacks packed in your daypack, it's time to lace up your hiking boots and take on one of Thorsmork's most celebrated trails.

The Tindfjallahringur, or "Circle of Tindfjoll Mountains," is a mountainous loop that weaves through some of Iceland's most dramatic landscapes.

Through this trail, you'll climb to an elevation of 1,640 feet (500 meters), stretching for 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) Though the path includes some steeper sections and technical terrain, the effort is rewarded with stunning vistas of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and the ever-changing hues of Thorsmork's vibrant vegetation.

As you hike, your guide will share stories about the landscape, its volcanic origins, and the resilience of Icelandic women throughout history. The supportive environment of this women-led tour makes every step feel purposeful, whether tackling a challenging section or sharing laughter over a snack break.

Along the way, take moments to pause and soak in the peaceful surroundings, from the sound of glacial rivers to the sweeping views of distant mountain ridges. Thorsmork and the Highlands region are remote, so there will be fewer crowds to encounter here.

After five to six hours on the trail, you'll return to the Basar mountain hut, where a well-earned dinner awaits. While preparing and enjoying your meal, feel free to share stories of the day with your fellow hikers.

Since this adventure takes place during summer, between June and early September, you may also enjoy the beauty of the midnight sun. The sun doesn't fully set on the horizon during this time, so there will be extended daylight hours.

Thorsmork has beautiful trails.

Day 3 - Rettarfell Mountain to Reykjavik

Begin your final morning in the Thorsmork Nature Reserve with a tasty breakfast at Basar. Then, like the previous day, don’t forget to do some stretching and basic exercises to help energize you for a memorable farewell hike.

With the highland bus scheduled to depart in the afternoon at 15:00, there’s still time to immerse yourself in the enchanting landscapes of this Icelandic paradise.

Today’s hike takes you up the nearby Rettarfell mountain, a modest but rewarding trail that offers one last opportunity to connect with Thorsmork’s beauty.

At an elevation reaching 850 feet (260 meters), this hike is accessible yet rich in breathtaking views. The 2.5 mile (4-kilometer) trail winds through mossy slopes and rugged terrain that will lead to panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys, glaciers, and peaks.

From the summit, you can enjoy contrasting views of Thorsmork’s vibrant greens against the icy expanse of the Eyjafjallajokull, Myrdalsjokull, and Tindfjallajokull glaciers.

As you hike, take a moment to reflect on the nature reserve’s deep connection to Icelandic folklore and Norse mythology. Named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder, Thorsmork is steeped in legends of powerful deities and their influence on the land.

Your guide might share tales of Thor’s might and the cultural significance of this awe-inspiring region, adding a layer of wonder to your journey. Feel free to ask them questions.

After descending Rettarfell, you will hike back to the Basar hut to pack your belongings and savor the final moments in this charming location.

At 15:00, the group will board the highland bus back to Reykjavik, taking one last look at Thorsmork’s majestic landscapes as they fade into the distance. The scenic drive back is the perfect time to reflect on the memories made, the bonds formed, and the wild beauty of Iceland that has left an indelible mark.
