Description

Witness a beautiful outlet of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull, and scale its icy surface, on this thrilling half-day tour. This excursion should not be missed by those who want to try the essential Icelandic experience of glacier hiking in a remote and spectacular location.

This tour begins when you meet your guide and small group at the Freysnes gas station, an easy to find location on the Icelandic Ring Road, just outside the Skaftafell Nature Reserve in south-east Iceland. You’ll board you modified super jeep, and be driven fifteen minutes to Falljökull Glacier. At its base, your guide will provide you with crampons, a helmet and an ice axe to aid and protect you on your journey, give you a safety briefing, then lead you up onto the majestic feature.

Falljökull is a bit of a challenging climb, and it requires a moderate level of fitness. When you start to ascend, you’ll be left in little doubt as to why glacier hiking is one of Iceland’s most popular activities. The experience is otherworldly, with endless expanses of white and blue ice stretching in all directions, unbelievable formations such as crevasses and caverns, and spectacular views over the National Park and South Coast.

This glacier hiking tour lasts over three hours, giving you plenty of time to take in the views, shoot the sites with your camera, and learn a wealth about the glaciers from your guide. Before you descend, you’ll know all about how they formed, how they changed since Iceland’s settlement, and the threats that face them in the modern era.

After a thrilling excursion, you’ll be driven back to your vehicle at the gas station.

Don’t miss an excellent opportunity to explore a glacier in Southeast Iceland in summer. Check availability by choosing a date.
