Strandir is an area that has both an exciting and tragic history, and its best known for its Witchcraft, witch-hunting and sorcery tales. The "burning age", is a well known period in Icelandic history which lasted from the 15th-18th century.
It began with three men being burned at the stake accused of sorcery and ended with a man being sentenced to the fire, but the conviction was later changed to life in captivity.
About 170 people were accused of sorcery and witchcraft during this time, and 21 were sentenced to burn. There is a lot of history here and you will explore the area and take a step back in time.
You will start your journey early, driving from Reykjavík to Hólmavík, a small town which is the largest settlement in Strandir. In Hólmavík you can visit the fascinating Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft and learn more about Iceland’s dark past.
Next, you will drive along the coastline of Steingrimsfjordur, where you might see some Humpback Whales swimming in the Fjord. About 70 kilometres from Hólmavík there is a small magical village where hundreds of people lived during the Golden “herring” age.
Your guide will explain how life was in those years and take you to see the abandoned factory and the rusted remains of MS Sudurland, an Icelandic freighter ship that sank on Christmas Eve in 1986. The ship had a crew of eleven but only five survived.
Just north of Djúpavík, you will visit one of the most remote man-made swimming pools in the world, Krossneslaug. It’s the perfect place to take a relaxing dip in the beautiful nature Strandir has to offer.
Book now for a truly sensational experience, and you will get to see and experience the nature of Strandir with all of your senses. Check availability by choosing a date.
