Ideal for those yearning to explore beyond the city limits, this group tour, with a maximum of 30 to 40 participants, promises an enchanting journey into the heart of nature's celestial spectacle.
Your experience begins as you meet your guide at the tour bus stops in downtown Reykjavik or select hotels outside the city center. Enjoy the convenience of inclusive pickup and drop-off during the tour, with the duration adjusting to accommodate early aurora appearances or extended hunting times.
As you venture away from the city's glow to minimize light pollution, your final destination remains flexible, adapting to cloud coverage and nightly activity. The drive is kept short, and multiple stops may occur, reflecting the elusive nature of the northern lights. The expert guide, skilled in predicting prime locations, may opt to linger, turning the expedition into a waiting game that always rewards patience.
While on the quest for the aurora borealis, your guide will skillfully set up their camera to capture striking group photos. Ensuring everyone has an opportunity for a memorable shot, you can relax in warm blankets, savor hot chocolate, tea, and cookies, and indulge in stargazing while awaiting the celestial display. If your hunt proves successful, relive the magic with complimentary photos delivered via a Dropbox link within seven days of your tour.

Important details before the tour: An email with the tour confirmation will be sent on the day of the tour around 5 pm. Please ensure you check your email before the tour and contact the tour operator if any issues arise.
Group size will vary depending on the season. You will be picked up from either your hotel, guesthouse, or bus stop starting at departure time (Please allow 1 hour for everyone to be picked up).
The bus size can vary, depending on group sizes, with a maximum group size of 35 to 40 people per vehicle. On larger vehicle tours, there is a private guide and photographer for the group, along with a separate driver, to keep everyone warm and cozy in the bus with enough space. In the chilly conditions, having a warm and cozy bus is essential to heat up in between photos or attempts to spot the northern lights.
With extensive experience, this has been the best and most appreciated setup for the tour. A self-service station for hot chocolate, coffee, and tea with cookies is available. Guidance is provided so you can take care of yourselves regarding refreshments. The journey will take you outside of the city limits, away from as much light pollution as possible, as the northern lights are harder to see from Reykjavik.
The location will depend on cloud coverage and activity each time. Efforts are made to keep the drive as short as possible, with possible stops at various locations, as the lights can be quite elusive. Often, it will be a waiting game for this beautiful phenomenon while the guide sets up a camera for the free photo shoot of your group.
The tour's operation is weather-dependent, and it only proceeds if there is a high possibility of a sighting. Daily assessments are made, and the decision to run the tour is made by 5 p.m.. In the event of a weather-related cancellation, you will be notified at this time, and any questions can be directed to info@davidtheguide.com.
Good to know after the tour: A note on the northern lights—they are fickle and elusive. While common in Iceland, they cannot be promised. To ensure you get another chance to see them, a second tour will be provided if the first one turns out to be only stargazing and hot chocolate. The re-use ticket is valid for two years after purchase. Upon a successful northern lights sighting, photo links will be sent to you within 48 hours, to be sent to the email address used for the booking.
