Description
Find out why Iceland is nicknamed the land of ice and fire with this exciting day on the South Coast that includes a walk by a glacier and a visit to the Icelandic Lava Show in Vik. This tour should not be missed by those seeking a perfect blend of sightseeing, adventure, and intrigue.
You will be picked up from Reykjavik early in the morning of this tour and driven along the country's beautiful Ring-Road to the South Coast. You'll first stop in the charming southern town of Hvolsvollur, where you can pick up refreshments for the day and admire the way the locals utilize the geothermal forces for greenhouses and energy. You'll then continue to an awe-inspiring waterfall, Skogafoss, which stands at 60 meters tall and is immensely powerful, always throwing off a great cloud of spray.
Next, you will head further along the Ring Road to the beach of Reynisfjara. This shore is covered in black sands from the eruptions of years past and boasts intriguing lava formations, such as hexagonal basalt columns and dramatic sea stacks.
You'll then stop at the adjacent village of Vik and head to the exciting Icelandic Lava Show. Here, they re-melt lava rocks from the 1918 Katla eruption in front of your very eyes, allowing you to marvel over the intensity of Iceland's volcanic forces while you learn about how such events have shaped the country.
After a quick break for an optional lunch here, you'll continue to the glacier tongue of Solheimajokull, where your hiking adventure awaits. Though you won't be mounting the ice cap, you'll be able to enjoy a more leisurely trek adjacent to it as you learn about how such features were formed and their effects on the surrounding nature. Your time here will no doubt be mesmerizing as you marvel over crevasses, ridges, and snowscapes.
Following this adventure, you'll start to head back to Reykjavik, but not without one more stop. Seljalandsfoss waterfall is just as tall and spectacular as Skogafoss, which you saw earlier, and though more gentle, falls before a breathtaking cavern. During favorable conditions, you can even encircle it!
