Explore the natural beauty of Lake Myvatn in North Iceland and discover how it shaped Iceland for thousands of years. This exciting five-hour small-group tour takes you to the Lake Myvatn area, the final leg of the Diamond Circle route, where you'll see different attractions that'll leave you breathless.
The adventure begins when a driver-guide picks you up from your Akureyri hotel. The drive from the city to the Lake Myvatn area is roughly an hour long.
Heading toward Lake Myvatn, you'll be treated to stunning scenery made up of impressive landscapes. Use this time to chat with the friendly driver who has a lot of stories to share about the area.
Lake Myvatn is located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Akureyri. It covers an area of 14 square miles (37 square kilometers), measuring 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) wide and almost 6 miles (9.5 kilometers) long. It's also one of the country's most geologically active areas.
The first stop around the lake is Godafoss, one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls with significant historical value. Godafoss waterfall falls from a height of 39 feet (12 meters) with a width of 98 feet (30 meters). Follow the water as it falls and creates a display of blue-green swirling patterns.
Next is the Skutustadagigar pseudocraters. Located on Lake Myvatn's southern side, these craters were formed thousands of years ago during volcanic eruptions.
Following the pseudocraters are the Dimmuborgir lava formations. These lava fields were formed around 2,300 years ago and resembled a labyrinth of towering rock formations, arches, and caves.
Exploring Dimmuborgir feels like stepping into a mythical realm as if wandering through an ancient abandoned city sculpted by volcanic forces.
Next, you'll visit Grjotagja, a small lava cave with a thermal spring inside. The spot can sometimes be challenging to spot, making it a hidden gem of North Iceland. In addition, the Grjotagja lava cave is so beautiful it was chosen to be one of the filming locations for the Game of Thrones TV series.
Another fantastic stop is the Namaskard geothermal area. As you approach the site, you'll be greeted by a scene of steaming vents, bubbling mud pots, and colored mineral deposits.
Moreover, the ground features red, yellow, and ochre hues, creating an alien-like atmosphere. The distinct smell of sulfur fills the air, hinting at the intense geothermal activity beneath the surface.
The last stop is Hverarond, a geothermal area featuring fumarole fields, mud pools, mud pots, and hot springs. With various minerals, boiling pools, and black rivers in Hverarond, expect a visual treat of colorful landscapes.
After the tour, the driver will take you back to your hotel in Akureyri. Be sure to take more pictures during the ride back to the city.
