Get the adrenaline pumping and join this beautiful alpine rock climbing tour in Mount Skessuhorn, not far from Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik. This 12-hour excursion is perfect for climbers who want to scale Iceland’s unique and fascinating rock formations with the help of an experienced guide.
Your adventure begins in Reykjavik, where your guide and instructor will pick you up. With expertise in rock climbing and mountain hiking, this guide will provide top-notch assistance for the next 12 hours.
The drive from Reykjavik takes you north towards Skessuhorn mountain, sometimes called the Matterhorn of Iceland. This peak is just to the east of Borgarnes town in West Iceland or Borgarfjordur region.
Mount Skessuhorn is a pyramid-shaped mountain along the Skarddheidi mountain range. Skessuhorn rises 3,172 feet (967 meters) above sea level, and it is one of the most fun mountains to climb close to Reykjavík.
Once you reach the parking lot at the base of the route, your experienced climber guide will teach you how to use the climbing gear before starting the approach to the bottom of the mountain.
The approach takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours, so you can also enjoy the grassy fields and canyons of the Icelandic countryside on the hike there. This approach is not flat, so it is recommended that you wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support.
After the approach, the group will stop for lunch and drinks and enjoy the beautiful views. After the lunch break, the fun continues. You’ll start gearing up for the climb ahead with a harness, helmet, and other climbing gear.
Approaching the mountain from its southwest ridge, the climb itself is not hard, so it is suitable for most people who have some scrambling experience. The tour will be with a small group ensuring a personal and safe experience.
Climbing the northwest ridge takes three to four hours of scrambling and moderate climbing. After you reach the summit, you will take a break to have some light refreshments and grab some photos of the stunning landscape.
On the way back, you’ll take the same route back down the ridge, or if preferred, it’s possible to take the normal hiking trail down the mountain. Your guides will make this decision based on the preferences of the group and weather conditions.
Once you have completed the descent, you will hike back to the car and be driven back to Reykjavík.
