This excursion is a private tour, so it will be just you and your group. Each helicopter has four seats, which is excellent for couples, small families, or groups of friends.
There's no need to wait for other guests, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions. On this once-in-a-lifetime trip, you'll make fantastic memories with your family and friends and enjoy a personalized experience at the volcano site.
When you're ready, you'll go out onto the tarmac and climb aboard the helicopter, ready for take-off.
As you depart, you'll see Reykjavik beneath you and enjoy views of its colorful tin roofs. You'll also spot famous landmarks like Hallgrimskirkja church and the Harpa Concert Hall.
Your pilot will take you to the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you'll see Iceland's most recent eruption site in the Fagradalsfjall volcano system. The volcano erupted in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Nearby, there have been more eruptions, close to the town of Grindavik.
Fagradalsfjall volcano gained international attention when it erupted in March 2021 after being dormant for nearly 6,000 years. In 2022, a nearby eruption occurred at Meradalir, and in 2023 at Litli-Hrutur, all part of the same volcanic system broadly called the Fagradalsfjall volcano.
Unlike explosive eruptions, Fagradalsfjall volcano's volcanic activity was characterized by effusive lava flows, creating stunning lava fountains and rivers of molten rock.
The eruptions provided a unique opportunity for researchers to study the dynamics of a relatively safe volcanic event, offering insights into the Earth's geology and magma movement.
You won't be landing at the eruption site as the best way to see into the crater and the surrounding lava fields is from the air.
The lava fields were formed by hot flowing lava during the volcanic eruptions, which changed the landscapes surrounding the volcano. Features like mountains and valleys have disappeared beneath the lava, and new craters have appeared.
On your helicopter ride, you'll see steam from the crater and lava fields, which are still hot and will take many years to cool down. Your pilot will circle the lava field and crater so that you can see it from different angles.
Your pilot will fly you back to Reykjavik Domestic Airport when the time is up.
