Description
Summary
Description
Meet one of Iceland's most famous winged residents and the world renown ‘Clown of the sea’, with this incredible Puffin watching tour. This is the perfect tour opportunity for nature enthusiasts, wildlife lovers and those travellers looking for authentically Icelandic experience.
This bird and wildlife watching tour starts at the Old Harbour by Ægisgarður in central Reykjavík. There, you can exchange your voucher for proper tickets, meet your experienced and knowledgeable captain and guide and when you're ready, you will board the vessel. We will soon take off towards one of two possible islands, Akurey or Lundey, both famed for their wealth of birdlife.
Puffins come to breed on islands and cliffs surrounding Iceland in summer, between May-August each year. They dig burrows in hills to lay their eggs in and the parents take turns incubating them. This they do for about 40 days until the egg hatches and from that point onwards it is not unlikely to see the parents flying about hunting for food.
In addition to Puffins, you will also have the opportunity to view other species of seabirds, including Eider ducks, Arctic terns, Guillemots and Cormorants. During the tour, the crew will eagerly tell you interesting facts and tales about Puffins, as well provide information on the gorgeous natural surroundings.
When you finally arrive at the island of choice, you will notice that the shoreline is fairly rocky. Fear not, your boat captain will readily take you to the best spot to get up close and personal to the puffins in their natural habitat, without disturbing their natural behaviour of course. If the weather is right we might even turn off the engines so that you can enjoy the nature better and listen to the bird's calls.
