Description
Discover Iceland's magnificent wildlife as you speed through the water on a RIB speedboat on this whale-watching and puffin tour. Those eager to spot marine life around the coast of North Iceland should book this private tour now.
Your day starts when your guide picks you up from your accommodation in Akureyri. This whale and puffin excursion is private for you and your party. A private tour means you can tailor the itinerary to your needs. You'll also have ample opportunity to ask questions about the wildlife you encounter.
Your driver will take you to board a boat in Skjalfandi Bay off the coast of Husavik, North Iceland. Skjalfandi Bay is one of Iceland's best places to see whales and puffins. It was also home to one of Iceland's first Scandinavian settlers, Gardar Svavarsson. Glacial activity created the bay, and the spectacular Kinnarfjoll mountains surround it.
You'll board a rigid inflatable boat (a RIB) at the port and set off to search for whales and puffins. The RIB is a lightweight, high-performance boat. It goes very fast and can cover vast areas, giving you the best chance of finding larger whales that might be further out to sea.
Although there's no guarantee you'll see whales, your expert guide knows where to go to get the best chance of seeing them during your tour. The bay's waters are rich in aquatic life, so there's a high chance you'll have a sighting during the trip.
More than 20 species of whale live around Iceland's shores. The species seen most often are minke whales, orcas, humpback whales, blue whales, harbor porpoises, and white-beaked dolphins.
This tour also takes you to Puffin Island, also known as Lundey Island. Iceland is home to around 60 percent of the world's population of Atlantic puffins, and you can find many of these on Puffin Island.
During their nesting season, between May and August, thousands of puffins can be seen here. During their nesting period, the puffins make a nesting burrow on the ground or within cracks in rocks and cliffs. They then lay a single egg and incubate it for around 40 days.
As well as puffins, Lundey Island is also home to a variety of other birdlife, including Arctic terns and guillemots. It's a birdwatcher's paradise!
Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to discover some of Iceland's best-known wildlife on a private boat tour in North Iceland. Check availability now by choosing a date.
