Description
Embark on an exhilarating journey to one of Iceland’s most captivating regions on this private West Iceland tour. This 10-hour adventure takes guests to the region’s various attractions, including an ice caving trip on the magnificent Langjokull glacier.
The day begins when a friendly guide picks you up from your hotel in Reykjavik. On the way to West Iceland, you’ll encounter gravel roadways and mountain passes, which can be uncomfortable on a regular vehicle. To ensure a safe and comfortable journey, you’ll ride a spacious 4x4 SUV.
West Iceland is a region of captivating natural beauty, offering a blend of dramatic landscapes, history, and culture. Located around 66 miles (107 kilometers) from Reykjavik, West Iceland is known for its striking scenery, including mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and fjords.
Your first stop is Deildartunguhver, Europe’s highest-flowing hot spring. Deildartunguhver is a natural hot spring with a staggering flow rate of around 47 gallons (180 liters) per second. Meanwhile, its water temperatures remain constant at 97° Celsius (207° Fahrenheit).
As for the landscape, you’ll see clouds of steam rising continuously from the ground, creating a misty atmosphere. You can safely observe the bubbling, steaming pools from viewing platforms, but you must still be careful, as the water is extremely hot. You can also visit the Krauma, a geothermal bath and spa resort a few meters from Deildartunguhver.
Your next stop is Reykholt, a small village best known as the home of Snorri Sturluson, a prominent medieval scholar, poet, and politician. Snorri lived here in the 13th century and penned some of the most important works in Icelandic literature about Norse mythology.
You’ll also visit Hraunfossar, a stunning series of waterfalls cascading from beneath a lava field into the Hvita river. As you explore the area, you’ll notice the striking contrast between the dark volcanic rock, the bright green moss that covers parts of the lava field, and the blue river below.
Next, you’ll head to Husafell, a farm and church site known for its natural beauty, outdoor activities, and historical significance. The area is particularly famous for its proximity to two of Iceland’s major glaciers, Langjokull and Eiriksjokull.
Moreover, Husafell serves as a famous resting spot for travelers. While in the area, you’ll have time for lunch as you recharge for your next stop: Langjokull glacier. Riding a modified super jeep, you’ll head to Langjokull and meet an experienced guide who will take you deep inside an ice cave.
As you walk inside the glacier, you’ll see its blue-tinged ice walls, revealing centuries of accumulated snowfall compressed into crystal-clear layers of ice. You’ll also learn about the glacier’s formation and the geological forces that shape its structure.
After conquering the ice cave, you’ll head to Kaldidalur, a mountain road that leads to Thingvellir National Park. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir holds a special place in Iceland’s history as the birthplace of its parliament, the Althingi, which was established here in 930 AD.
Geologically, the park boasts stunning natural landscapes and unique features. One of Thingvellri’s most significant geological features is the Almannagja gorge, a massive rift created by separating tectonic plates. Walking through Almannagja allows visitors to literally stand between the Eurasian and North American continents.
After exploring the wonders of Thingvellir National Park, you’ll return to your vehicle for the ride back to Reykjavik.
