Adventure into the Highlands of Iceland in style with this private tour to the Askja and Viti craters from North Iceland. Akureyri and Myvatn travelers and hikers seeking an exclusive adventure amongst incredible landscapes should grab their spot now.
This once-in-a-lifetime excursion begins when you are picked up in North Iceland from either the town of Akureyri or the Lake Myvatn area. You'll meet your private guide and board your comfortable, modern super jeep, designed for crossing the rugged terrain of the Highlands.
As you travel for the next 11 hours, your guide will tell you about your beautiful surroundings, much of which is steeped in history and folklore. Ask as many questions as you like, as there are no other guests competing for the attention of your private guide!
The landscapes you travel through will start rural and green but become more dramatic and barren the further you drive. Expect mountains, craters, lava fields, geothermal areas, rivers, and waterfalls. Enjoy the bumpy ride as super jeeps add to the adventurous experience of the trip.
You'll make several stops en route to the Askja caldera and Viti crater lake. The Hrossaborg explosion crater is a spectacular example of the area's volcanic activity and was a shooting location for the film Oblivion. The Gljufrasmidur waterfall is a powerful feature that roars through a dramatic lava field.
You'll then head to Herdubreid, a flat-top volcano with fantastic panoramas of the Highlands, including a breathtaking oasis called the Herdubreidarlindir hot springs. After this, you'll travel to an incredible canyon named Drekagil, which translates to 'Dragon's Gully.'
Once you reach the Askja caldera, you'll be blown away by its scale and beauty. This crater, which was created during an enormous eruption along the infamous Askja ravine, has a maximum diameter of 12 miles (20 kilometers), and is surrounded by the Dyngjufjoll mountains.
Within the Askja caldera is the vivid blue Viti crater lake. In summer, guests can sometimes swim in the waters here, though this cannot be guaranteed.
Traveling to these parts of the Highlands requires some short hikes over uneven terrain, but the paths are easily manageable for those with a reasonable level of fitness and mobility.
After an incredible day in the Highlands of Iceland, your private driver will drive you back to your Akureyri or Lake Myvatn accommodation. Keep your eyes out the window as you travel, as the sites on the return journey are spectacular.
