Description

Embark on a beautiful winter adventure from Myvatn with this sunrise hike ascending to the top of Mount Hverfjall. For nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and sunrise lovers, this journey promises a physical conquest and an emotional and sensory lift into the heart of Iceland's natural wonders.

Prepare for an unparalleled experience of the early morning rays casting a warm glow over the volcanic landscape. Stand atop Mount Hverfjall and witness the captivating moment when the sun, like a celestial painter, transforms the surrounding landscapes into a surreal masterpiece.

Mount Hverfjall is a colossal tephra crater formed 3000 years ago during an explosive eruption. Nestled in the heart of the Myvatn nature reserve, this crater offers a panoramic spectacle of the entire lake area, showcasing the profound influence of tectonic plate movements that have shaped this volcanic region for millennia.

Your journey begins with a hotel pickup from all major hotels and guesthouses by Lake Myvatn. Departure times vary to synchronize with the sunrise, commencing at 09:00 a.m. in January and 6:30 a.m. in March.

You'll need to wear warm clothing and a waterproof jacket and pants. Ensure you have good hiking boots or shoes, sunglasses, snacks, and water.

When you arrive at the hike's starting point, your guide will give you the other necessary equipment. They'll provide hiking poles and crampons to help you easily traverse Hverfjall's winter terrain. Snowshoes may also be required, depending on the conditions. Your guide will give you these if necessary.

The walk is easy-moderate, making it accessible for various fitness levels. It's a maximum of 1 mile (1.5 kilometers) from the starting point to the top. You might find it a little steep heading up the crater, but it's only a short trek with around 330 feet (100 meters) of elevation gain.

Your guide will then lead you on a 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) walk around the rim at the peak. At the top, you'll experience the magical moment as the sun ascends over the horizon. The low angle of the winter sun results in impressive sunrises nearly every day.

As you stroll around the crater rim, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes shaped by geological forces. Mount Hverfjall's peak offers a fresh perspective on the natural wonders of the surrounding area.

Marvel at the stunning vistas, including the Dimmuborgir rock formations and Lake Myvatn. You may even see features further afield on a clear day, such as Mount Askja and Mount Herdubreid.

After walking around the rim and enjoying the spectacular views from the top, you'll head back down the path to the hike's starting point. From there, your driver will take you back to Myvatn.

Don't miss the opportunity to witness the beauty of Mount Hverfjall at sunrise with this unforgettable 3-hour winter hike from Myvatn. Check availability now by choosing a date.
