Description

Delve into the magnificent wonders of west Iceland and enjoy a thrilling caving adventure with this immersive day tour. If you want to witness hot springs, waterfalls, cultural sites and subterranean marvels, then this is the adventure for you.

You’ll start your day when you are picked up in Reykjavik and introduced to your local guide and a small group of fellow travellers. From here, you will take to the Ring Road and begin your adventures in west Iceland’s spectacular nature.

Your first stop will be at dramatic hot spring of Deildatunghver. Pumping out over 180 litres of boiling water from the depths of the earth every second, more than any other hot spring in Europe, it is a wonderful place to admire the volcanic and geothermal forces that have shaped this country.

You will then come to a series of beautiful waterfalls, Hraunfossar, which trickle gently from a ledge of forested lava 900 metres wide. Just a short walk from this site is another waterfall, Barnafoss, though it is quite different, as it is narrow and races with ominous power through a ravine.

After a wonderful morning sightseeing, you will continue to Vidgelmir lava cave, where your adventurous exploration of its underground depths will begin.

Equipped with a helmet and light, you will enter this 1,600-metre long tunnel, which was created by a volcanic eruption centuries ago. Within it, you’ll discover a surprising amount of colour, with the rocks dyed by the elements of the earth, and some beautiful formations of lava. If travelling outside of summer, there will also be magical, glistenings stalagmites and stalactites of ice.

After marvelling here for over an hour, you’ll head to the final site of the day, Reykholt. This picturesque village, surrounded by rural bliss, is renowned for once being home to one of Iceland’s most famous people, Snorri Sturluson, a medieval poet, historian, writer and chieftain. Here, you’ll find Snorralaug, a manmade hot spring mentioned in his works that has been used since the 12th Century.

Once you’ve made the most of the incredible sites of west Iceland, you’ll return to Reykjavik.

Don’t miss this immersion into the cultural and natural attractions of Iceland’s west, with the bonus of a thrilling caving excursion. Check availability by choosing a date.
