Description

Embark on a journey to one of Iceland’s most captivating destinations Landmannalaugar, located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland, famous for its breathtaking landscapes such as vibrant colored rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, lava fields and epic hikes.

The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains are the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity. Laugahraun lava field was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1477 consisting of vast erratic black obsidian which is known for its smooth, sharp edges and unique appearance, and famed in the TV series Game of Thrones as “Dragon Glass”. Rhyolite is a type of volcanic rock that is made of quartz and silica and with minerals such as iron and sulphur adding extra color to the mountains. Brennisteinsalda or “the Sulphur Wave” is a very good example of this.

We will stay over 3 hours in Landmannalaugur and we offer approx. 2 hour guided hike through the obsidian fields up to Brennisteinsalda, but you are welcome to explore the area on your own within the given time frame. You can take on different trail or just relax and stay longer in the natural hot pool

This guided excursion, suitable for all levels of adventurers, is your opportunity to explore the stunning Landmannalaugar, nestled within the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Icelandic Highlands. It runs from June to September and welcomes explorers from the age of 10 and up, offering an easy to moderate level of activity.

The Landmannalaugar area is a special place created by volcanoes that erupted over thousands of years. One of its unique features is the Laugahraun lava field, which was formed in 1477 when a volcano erupted. The mountains in this area are made of a type of rock called rhyolite, which comes in different colors because of minerals like quartz, silica, iron, and sulfur.

The day begins with a morning pickup in Reykjavik. Pickup from Selfoss Hveragerði and Selfoss can also be arranged.

As you journey into the heart of Iceland's Highlands, you'll witness the ever-changing scenery outside your window. The drive itself is a part of the adventure, offering glimpses of Iceland's rugged beauty. You'll pass through unique landscapes, gradually ascending into the Highlands.

Your first destination is Hjalparfoss, a picturesque waterfall known for its unique double cascade where two rivers, Fossa and Thjorsa, converge and flow together. The name "Hjalp" or "help" reflects its significance as a respite for travelers navigating the challenging Sprengisandur route. Here, horses found nourishment amidst the lushness after a long, tiring journey.

Continuing your journey, you'll arrive at Landmannalaugar, where nature's wonders will captivate you. Spend over three hours exploring this area, with the option to embark on a guided two-hour hike through the Laugahraun lava field up to Brennisteinsalda, the Sulphur Wave.

This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in Iceland's unique geology, where volcanic activity has shaped the vibrant landscapes. The obsidian fields and colorful rhyolite mountains are a testament to the Earth's remarkable processes. Don't forget to bring your swimwear and towel for a relaxing dip in the natural hot pool.

As you head to the Valley of Tears, known as Sigoldugljufur, you'll discover another natural wonder. This Instagram-famous canyon boasts crystal-clear waterfalls, lush vegetation, small ponds, and enchanting cliffs. It's a place of serene beauty that has enchanted countless visitors.

Throughout the tour, you'll be accompanied by an English-speaking guide who will provide insights into Iceland's natural wonders.
