Description

Get your boots on and get ready to experience the raw and natural beauty of the Icelandic countryside hiking up this famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull. Perfect for those who would prefer to escape the crowds of the popular South Coast as well challenge yourself with a glacial hike.

Ejyafjallajökull is known the world over since 2010 when the sub-glacial volcano erupted melting its ice cap flooding the countryside as well as throwing volcanic ash skywards, leading to the closure of much European airspace.

Your hike will begin at Seljavallalaug which happens to be one of the oldest pools in Iceland. From there, you will follow a time-beaten footpath up Lambafelsheiði, or "sheep mountain" which will lead you to a small stream. This is a perfect location for your first break where you can sample wild Icelandic water from the stream and some traditional dried fish kindly provided by your guide.

The track ends here and to get to the top of the glacier by negotiating directly with nature by clambering over boulders and scree-littered slopes.

Before you get onto the glacier itself, there will be a lunch break as you have most likely already worked up quite the appetite. You will be introduced to your glacier hiking equipment and guided in technique for the final push to the summit.

As you reach the summit, be prepared for break-taking 360°views of the South Coast and Þórsmörk valley in the Highlands. On clear days you might be able to spot the rugged Westman islands, an archipelago not far off the coast.

Once you have immortalised the beautiful landscape with your camera, it will be time to begin the descent along the same path.

At the bottom of the mountain, you have a visit to the swimming pool to look forward too. Rest your muscles and relax in Seljavallalaug while taking in the magnificent surroundings. You will once again be treated to traditional Icelandic snacks for an authentic taste of culture.

All of the guides are local Icelanders with many years of experience in the mountains.

Don't miss your chance to summit a volcano and a glacier at the same time while enjoying the simplicity of a small group and expert guide. Book this tour now to conquer Eyjafjalljökull even if you can't say it. Check availability by choosing a date.
