Description
On this route, you will explore the National Park of Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Described as 'Iceland in Miniature', here you can find breathtaking scenery and unique nature.
Your first stop is at Budir. The black church of Budir is located in the lava fields of Budahraun. It is possible to walk down to the sea and witness where lava meets golden sand. Budir was built in1848 and reconstructed in 1987. There is also a beautiful country hotel next door.
Just after leaving Budir, you will pass by a farm named Oxl. At one point, Iceland's only mass murdered lived there; a man nicknamed Axlar-Bjorn. Stories say he killed up to 18 people in the 1570-90s.
Snaefellsjokull is a glacier that covers a volcano. This glacier rises to 1446 meters at its highest point. In the novel 'A Journey to the Center of the Earth' (1864) by Jules Verne, the protagonists find the entrance to the centre of the Earth on Snaefellsjokull glacier.
Next on the trip is Arnarstapi. This is one of Iceland's many old fishing villages. It was an important trading post in the past, but now the area is flooded with many summerhouses. Basalt cliffs surround Arnarstapi pier and are home to impressive birdlife. There is also a good anchorage for the small boats that sail from the little harbour.
If you take a walk along the coastline, you will see the birds and the magnificent lava formations, striking cliffs and gorgeous rock formations.
From Arnarstapi you will head on to Hellnar. There is now a hotel and down by the harbour you will find a small, cosy cafe run by locals. To the west of Hellnar is the deserted house Dagverdara.
Your next stop will be at Malarrif and Londrangar. Londrangar Sea Stacks are ancient wind and sea shaped basalt volcanic spikes that stand just east of Malarrif. The higher ledge is 75 meters high, and the smaller one is 61 meters high. There is a lighthouse in Malarrifi. Previously, Malarrif was a farm. In its place, there is now an information centre for Snaefellsnes National Park.
Djupalonssandur is a beautiful coast with dark cliffs and black sand. There are some large stones which local men used to attempt to lift to test their strength during the fishing era. Men who couldn't lift at least the rock weighing 54 kg were not strong enough to work as a fisherman.
On your way around the glacier, you will pass through the fishing villages of Rif, Hellissandur and Olafsvik and continue to Grundarfjordur. These are all lovely villages full of character. In Grundarfjordur you will find Iceland's most photographed mountain, Kirkjufell. It is a free-standing 463 m high mountain. Very close to the mountain is Kirkjufellsfoss, a beautiful waterfall. Kirkjufell was one of many filming locations in Iceland used in the Game of Thrones series.
