The Golden Circle tour consists of Iceland‘s most popular attractions. This tour is perfect for those who want to see these attractions in comfort.
Your tour will begin with you being picked up at your accommodation. You will then head towards the first stop at Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir is one of Iceland’s most admired attractions.
Thingvellir holds a unique appeal for lovers of history and nature. Thingvellir is the location the Viking settlers chose to meet in the world’s oldest democratic Parliaments, called the Althingi. At this fascinating sight, you can see the mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is the point where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. These plates drift apart at a rate of 2-3 centimetres per year. Thingvellir is also famous for being the setting for some well-known scenes in the HBO television series ‘Game of Thrones.’
The next stop is the iconic Geysir Geothermal Area in the Haukadalur Valley. Geysir is a place that is full of erupting hot springs. As you travel through the area, the geothermal activity gets more intense. Many hot pools, clay post and fumaroles are visible from the road you will travel on. The Haukadalur valley is home to vividly coloured hills and soil. It is also home to the famous geysers Geysir and Strokkur.
The most active of the two geysers is Strokkur, and it blows up water 20 to 40 metres (66to 132 ft) in the air almost every ten minutes. Here you will also be able to have a stop to check out the Geysir shop for souvenirs or a bite to eat.
For the third stop on the tour, you will head to one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls, the rainbow-ridged Gullfoss. Gullfoss is located in an ancient valley where the waterfall cascades down an overall height of 32 metres (105 ft). Gulfoss flows at its heaviest in the height of summer with an average of 140 cubic metres (4944 cubic feet) per second. The waters of Gullfoss come from Langjokull Glacier and travel through the Hvita River.
On your way back to Reykjavik you will have the option to stop at Kerid, a volcanic crated formed about 6500 years ago. This crater is completely oval and has a lake at the bottom. The colours of Kerid range from the fiery reds and oranges of the rocks; to the azure blue of its water. If you do choose to visit Kerid, please note that there is an admission fee of 500 Icelandic Krona.
There is also the option of taking a dip in a secret geothermal lagoon on this tour, making for a truly unique experience.
