10-Hour Golden Circle Super Jeep Tour with a Northern Lights Hunt from Reykjavik
Description
Summary
Description
Join this tour and view the most iconic attractions in Iceland: the Golden Circle and the Northern Lights.
This excursion offers a full afternoon of sightseeing around the nation’s three most popular attractions, and an evening hunting for the elusive and magnificent aurora borealis. Conducted in a Super Jeep, this tour promises to give you a comfortable, personal, and adventurous experience.
First, you’ll be picked up from your accommodation in Reykjavík for a visit to Þingvellir National Park. This incredible place is located where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling away from each other, leading to some beautiful natural sights and giving the region a distinct character.
Not only is the area especially scenic, but it also has great historical significance. Alþingi, the world’s longest-running continuous parliament was founded here in 930 AD; it was thus the site of many of the country’s significant developments. Þingvellir has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 for this reason and is considered to be a national treasure.
At your second stop, at the Geysir area, you’ll see the geothermal processes of the earth on clear display. Many bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and gurgling mud pools adorn the area; but it is best known for its two, world-famous geysers.
The larger of the two, Geysir itself, may eject a column of boiling water over 70 metres (230 ft) in the air, although its eruptions are not frequent anymore. On the other hand, Strokkur is extremely active, blasting water up to 40 metres (131 ft) high every five to ten minutes.
The third stop on the Golden Circle is the magnificent Gullfoss, named ‘the Golden Waterfall’ due to the rainbows that shimmer above it in good weather. Plunging into an ancient gorge, the roots of the waterfall come from Langjökull glacier, which is visible from the falls on a clear day. When the ground is not too icy, you can approach a viewing platform at the waterfall’s edge, to truly appreciate its incredible power.
During the final part of this tour, after evening has set, you will head out to seek out the Northern Lights. Watching this amazing phenomenon dancing across the sky is an experience that will stay with you for life and the perfect ending to this magical day.
Even if you are not lucky enough to catch the auroras, seeing Iceland’s magnificent landscape by night is still a fantastic opportunity. In the Super Jeep, however, you have a much better chance of seeing them than in a bus, being able to access darker, lesser-known viewing locations that they cannot.
