Description
Summary
Description
Explore Iceland’s most famous sightseeing route, the Golden Circle, by booking this incredible nine-hour excursion. Those eager to discover some of Iceland’s most breathtaking sights and discover more about its geology should book this small-group tour now.
The tour starts with pick-up from the bus stop outside the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. You’ll meet the expert guide leading the day’s adventure and the other guests participating.
This geology tour is a small-group tour with a maximum of six guests, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask any questions about the geology of the Golden Circle sights. The guide is a qualified geologist with in-depth knowledge of the attractions you’ll visit.
The first stop is Thingvellir National Park. Both culturally and geologically important to Iceland, Thingvellir National Park is the oldest national park in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are visible at this national park. Your guide will give you more information about the geology of these plates and tell you about the park’s cultural significance - it’s the place where the Icelandic parliament was formed in 930 A.D.
While in the national park, you’ll see the Oxararfoss waterfall, a two-drop waterfall that cascades over the Almannagja gorge. The Oxararfoss waterfall is 44 feet (around 13 meters) high and 20 feet (about six meters) wide. You may recognize it as it appeared in an episode of Game of Thrones.
Next, it’s time to visit the Geysir geothermal area. You can see the geysers, smell the sulfur, and feel the heat from the hot springs. Geysir is no longer active, but you’ll see Strokkur erupting every 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll have time for a short lunch break here.
Once you’ve refueled, it’s onwards to Gullfoss waterfall. Gullfoss, which translates to “golden falls,” is located in the Hvita river canyon in Southwest Iceland. It’s a spectacular view, and you’ll see the water cascade over 100 feet (roughly 32 meters) in two stages.
The last stop on this geology tour is the Kerid volcanic crater, created around 6,500 years ago when a volcano erupted. The crater slopes are red because of the fresh iron deposits left there, and the water in the crater lake is an intense azure blue. Its vibrant colors make it a magnificent sight.
Once you’ve finished marveling at the amazing sights on the Golden Circle, your guide will drop you off in Reykjavik. From here, you can head home or continue your adventures in Iceland.
