Description
Summary
Description
Embark on a full-day Golden Circle tour from Reykjavik and discover the highlights of this popular sightseeing route. This eight-hour excursion is ideal for those who want to visit the best attractions of South Iceland, including Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and the Gullfoss waterfall.
The tour begins with pick-up from your accommodation (or a nearby bus stop) in Reykjavik. You’ll meet your expert local guide and will make any other stops to collect the other guests on this tour. Your group for the day will have a maximum of 19 people, so your guide will always be available to answer questions.
The first stop on the route is Thingvellir National Park, one of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Iceland. Thingvellir is a place of particular cultural importance for Iceland, as it was home to the first gathering of the Icelandic parliament, known as Althingi. Viking chiefs would assemble here yearly to settle disputes and celebrate victories.
Thingvellir National Park is also gorgeous. With glacial springs, mountain peaks, waterfalls, lava fields, and impressive geological formations, it’s a fantastic place to explore and take photos. You’ll also get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to walk between two tectonic plates that are drifting apart.
After discovering the beauty and historical significance of Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area will be your next stop. It’s one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to its numerous active geysers.
The best-known is Geysir, which all other geysers are named after. Geysir is dormant, but the Strokkur geyser frequently erupts — usually around every ten minutes. Your guide will give you time to enjoy the view of the erupting geyser and take some photos. There are also restaurants in the area where you can purchase lunch and snacks.
Next, your group will visit the Gullfoss waterfall, also known as the Golden Falls. It’s a stunning two-tiered waterfall with up to 460 cubic feet (approximately 140 cubic meters) of glacial meltwater rushing over it every second. You might even see a rainbow formed above the water in good weather - an unforgettable view.
Your last stop of the day will be a visit to Efstidalur, a family-run farm that still operates under Icelandic farming traditions. Here you can enjoy the beautiful countryside of Iceland while savoring delicious Icelandic food, including an assortment of handmade ice cream.
You’ll head back to Reykjavik with a full stomach and some brilliant photos of your day on the Golden Circle. The bus will drop you off at your accommodation or a nearby bus stop with enough time left to enjoy a meal in Reykjavik.
