Description
East Iceland is an excellent place for photographers to explore beautiful and diverse landscapes without the disturbance of crowds. It is more remote and less populated than many parts of Iceland and remains off-the-beaten-path to most. This photography workshop is great for those who want to capture epic pictures of the lesser-visited part of Iceland.
This trip starts in the morning at Reykjavik Airport as you board an Air Iceland Connect flight to Egilsstaðir, the biggest town in the East fjords. There will be a 4x4 rental SUV or a van waiting for you so you can start exploring the area right away. The landscapes in the East of Iceland are diverse and different from other parts of the country. It has deep fjords, characterized by high mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and dotted with cute fishing villages.
East Iceland is also home to the largest forest in the country, Hallormsstaðarskógur, which on the banks of Lögurinn, the largest lake in the area. Around the lake, you might spot reindeer if you are lucky.
A must-visit spot in the region is Hengifoss waterfall, the third-highest and one of the grandest waterfalls in Iceland. There is a 40-60 minute hike uphill to reach Hengifoss, and on the way is another smaller waterfall called Litlanesfoss. Colourful red rock formations surround Hengifoss, easily visible in the cliffs on both sides of the waterfall. Another beautiful waterfall lies in one of the fjords, Mjóifjörður.
Other wonders abound in the region. The fjord Berufjörður has many volcanic formations, rivers and waterfalls. Breiðdalur valley, next to Berufjörður, is another special waterfall Flögufoss. It is relatively easy to access the waterfall with 20-30 minutes of an uphill hike. Borgarfjörður Eystri, buried deep in the northeast corner of the country, is home to the puffins and you will be able to snap great shots of the cute birds up close.
One of the most unique places in East Iceland is the newly discovered Stuðlagil, a deep canyon surrounded by tall basalt columns with a glacial river running through it. There is a 5 km hike over the mostly flat area to the canyon, which takes 3-4 hours to reach depending on the walking speed.

Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Reykjavik - Egilsstadir
Flying in the morning from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir, starting to explore East Iceland around Egilsstaðir on the first day. Seyðisfjörður is a beautiful town on one of the deep east fjords Borgarfjörður eystri is the home of the elves and the Puffins, so you go out there and photograph them, or at least the Puffins. Accommodation in a hotel in Egilsstadir.
Day 2 - Egilsstadir to Berufjörður and Breiðdalsvík
Exploring the south part of the East fjords from Egilsstadir, into Breiðdalur valley and Berufjörður, traveling over some of the highest mountain roads in Iceland. In Breiðdalur you will hike to the Flögufoss waterfall, a beautiful waterfall with a great mountain range in the back. These two fjords offer a variety of landscapes, cliffs, high mountains, rivers and waterfalls that we are going to explore.
Day 3 - Hengifoss waterfall and Borgarfjörður eystri.
Starting the morning with one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, Hengifoss and Litlanesfoss. It is a 40-60 minutes long hike up hill towards the waterfalls, half way up is the Litlanesfoss waterfall, surrounded with basalt columns. Heading up to the highlands towards Snæfell and Hálslón if the weather is preferable.
Day 4 - Stuðlagil canyon
You will start the day with a hike to the picturesque Stuðlagil canyon, 3-4 hours (5 kilometres one way). Stuðlagil is a unique canyon with basalt columns on both sides of a river running through. The photo opportunities are endless and we will spend most of the day exploring the area and finding good compositions. On the way back you will stop to photograph another waterfall, called Rjúkandi. A good place to practice and try out long exposure photography.
Day 5 - Klifbrekkufossar and the fjords.
A morning session at Klifbrekkufossar in Mjóifjörður, traveling over a high mountain road down to the fjord where the waterfall is. Going back and visiting the towns of Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður and Stöðvarfjörður in the afternoon. In Stöðvarfjörður you will visit Petra's stone museum, a small local museum full of beautiful rocks and minerals from the mountains in the area.

Good to know
Domestic flight from Reykjavik to Egilsstaðir departs from Reykjavik Airport. We are flying back from Egilsstadir to Reykjavik on the last day, arriving in Reykjavik around 8 pm.
