Description

Go diving between continents in the clear waters of the Silfra Fissure in this unforgettable six-hour small-group tour. Silfra is the top dive site in the world, located at the heart of Thingvellir National Park, and is the perfect destination for adventurers looking for the ultimate diving experience.

This tour offers a pick-up in Reykjavik at selected points and is a one-hour drive from the city to Silfra. If you choose to drive to the location, you can meet up with your guides at the Silfra car park in Thingvellir 15 minutes before the tour begins.

Once you arrive at Silfra, you’ll meet your certified professional divemaster and a licensed adventure guide. They’ll go over the basics of scuba diving, safety equipment and protocols, and the different sections of the Silfra fissure that you’ll explore throughout the dive.

The fissure in Silfra began to open up in 1798 from the pulling apart of the Eurasian and American tectonic plates in Iceland on the Mid-Atlantic Rift. Thingvellir National Park in that valley, and the tectonic movement has shaped its landscape dramatically through the centuries.

Over the years, meltwater from the Langjokull glacier has traveled underground and filtered through miles of lava fields before eventually reaching the fissure. This hundred-year process results in the crystal clear waters of Silfra that make for an excellent diving site.

When you’re ready to enter the waters, you’ll step onto a platform in waist-deep water to help you acclimate to the temperature. The temperature underwater in Silfra maintains at 35 degrees Fahrenheit (two degrees Celsius), so you can even take this tour in winter.

After you dive in, however, the sight beneath the surface will amaze you as you begin to weave through the first section, 'the Silfra Maze.' You’ll see up close the jagged rock formations and green vegetation through the blue filter of the water.

The narrow ravine then opens up to 'the Silfra Hall', which leads to the area’s deepest point, called 'the Silfra Cathedral'. Here, the visibility of the waters is astounding at 300 feet (100 meters) and shows you all of Silfra’s underwater canyons in astonishing detail.

The sunlight can even refract through the surface and cast an ethereal glow on the floor, making for an unforgettable sight. Then, you’ll continue to the final section, 'the Silfra Lagoon,' to bask in even more underwater beauty before finally exiting the waters.

The guides will help you out, and you will walk back to the car park to remove your equipment. You can then enjoy some cookies and hot chocolate to warm you up after a cold, deep dive.

The dive can be quite challenging, so the tour requires drysuit diving certification to ensure you can handle the experience without compromising your safety or enjoyment. A little water may also slip through your drysuit, so remember to pack a change of clothes.

Don’t miss this fantastic journey of diving between continents and seeing an underwater paradise in one of the world's most treasured and beautiful diving destinations. Check availability now by choosing a date.
