Be amazed by Iceland’s beautiful birdlife in the fascinating region of Lake Myvatn on this private birdwatching tour. This nine-hour enriching adventure takes travelers to different stops around Lake Myvatn to see various bird species, sceneries, and landscapes.
The day begins when an experienced guide picks you up from a designated location in the Myvatn region. You’ll then ride a comfortable vehicle that will take you around the Lake Myvatn area and to the best spots for birdwatching.
The Lake Myvatn region is known for its rich birdlife, geological formations, and geothermal activity. Formed by a volcanic eruption over 2,300 years ago, the area around the lake features a landscape full of craters, lava fields, and bubbling mud pots.
As a birdwatcher’s paradise, the lake is home to various bird species, including ducks, which are abundant due to the nutrient-rich waters. The area’s name, Myvatn, actually translates to “Midge Lake,” reflecting the swarms of midges that thrive in summer. These midges are a crucial food source for the bird population.
One of the most notable is the species of Barrow’s Goldeneye, found in European countries. The Barrow’s Goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck recognizable by the male’s glossy black head with a purplish sheen.
You’ll also notice its bright yellow eyes and a crescent-shaped white patch between the eye and the bill. Though less colorful, the female is equally distinctive, with brown heads, yellow eyes, and a subtle white collar.
Another adorable duck species in the area is the Harlequin Duck. A small, strikingly patterned sea duck known for its vibrant plumage and preference for fast-moving waters, the Harlequin Duck has a small body and frequently dives underwater.
Aside from small birds, the Myvatn has its share of bigger ones like the Gyrfalcon. Considered the largest falcon in the world, the Gyrfalcon features a powerful build, keen eyesight, and remarkable hunting skills. Interestingly, the Gyrfalcon is Iceland’s national bird and was even worshipped back in the day by the Vikings.
On top of seeing Iceland’s dynamic birdlife, you’ll visit some of the most impressive spots in the Lake Myvatn region. You’ll visit the Laxa river, one of Iceland’s favorite spots for salmon fishing. You’ll also stop at marshes and ponds and visit lava fields and rock formations.
At the end of the tour, your guide will take you back to the designated meeting point in Myvatn. During the ride back, you’ll see the captivating landscapes of the region as you carry the memories of your enriching experience.
