Description

Embark on an enriching journey toward three of North Iceland’s most captivating sites. This 8-hour tour takes travelers to the Godafoss waterfall and Lake Myvatn before capping off the day with a relaxing dip at the Myvatn Nature Baths.

The action begins in the morning when a friendly guide picks you up from Akureyri. You’ll then be riding a comfortable minibus that will serve as your main transportation for the tour. Your first stop is the iconic Godafoss, one of Iceland’s most celebrated waterfalls.

However, before reaching Godafoss waterfall, you’ll pass along the beautiful Eyjafjordur fjord. Spanning 47 miles (70 kilometers), Eyjafjordur is one of the country’s longest fjords. This picturesque fjord is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich history, and diverse wildlife.

Upon reaching Godafoss waterfall, you’ll be greeted with a breathtaking view. On sunny days, the water creates a curtain of mist and rainbows. Known as the "Waterfall of the Gods," Godafoss waterfall cascades over a horseshoe-shaped cliff that spans 100 feet (30 meters) in width and drops 39 feet (12 meters) into a picturesque pool.

After enjoying the beauty of Godafoss waterfall, you’ll return to your minibus and head to your next destination: Lake Myvatn. One of Iceland’s most beautiful lakes, Lake Myvatn boasts unique landscapes and rich biodiversity.

Formed by a volcanic eruption around 2,300 years ago, Lake Myvatn spans approximately 14 square miles (37 square kilometers), making it Iceland’s fourth-largest lake. It is surrounded by various geological formations, including lava fields, pseudocraters, and hot springs.

As you explore the area, you’ll see various stunning sights led by the pseudocraters Skutustadagigar. These pseudocraters result from volcanic activity when lava flows over wetlands, causing steam explosions.

The guide will also take you to Dimmuborgir, a captivating area known for its dramatic and unusual lava formations. Dimmuborgir translates to "Dark Castles," a fitting description for this labyrinth of towering volcanic rock structures resembling a collapsed citadel.

You can explore well-maintained walking paths that wind through the lava fields, offering close-up views of the unique formations. Some of the rocks form arches, columns, and caves, creating a breathtaking environment.

You’ll then head to Grjotagja, an enchanting cave known for its hot blue river. Grjotagja is home to a hot spring with crystal-clear blue waters that are geothermally heated. However, you can no longer dip in the hot springs, as the water’s temperature has become unpredictable.

If you are adventurous, you can attempt to have your photo taken while standing on two tectonic plates. Interestingly, these plates are the rift between the Eurasian and American continents.

After spending time inside the Grjotagja cave, you’ll head to the Hverir geothermal area. Known for its fascinating appearance, the Hverir geothermal area is full of boiling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and vibrant mineral deposits.

To cap off your day, you’ll head for a relaxing dip at the Myvatn Nature Baths. Often called the "Blue Lagoon of the North," the Myvatn Nature Baths are a geothermal spa offering a peaceful and rejuvenating experience for locals and visitors. It features mineral-rich waters sourced from underground hot springs.

The waters are naturally heated to a comfortable temperature ranging from 36-40° Celsius  (97-104° Fahrenheit). Moreover, the water’s high mineral content is believed to benefit the skin and promote overall well-being. Enjoy the calming views surrounding you as you feel the baths’ relaxing effects.   After an enriching tour, the guide will drive you back to Akureyri. You may also make a last stop at Eyjafjordur for more photos if there’s still some time to spare.
