Volcano Hike & Sightseeing Tour in the Reykjanes Peninsula Starting from Reykjavik
Description
Summary
Description
See the new eruption in the Reykjanes peninsula from a safe distance as you hike to the impressive field of black solidified lava. This tour is ideal for those who want to get as close as possible to the volcano while also discovering other beautiful landmarks of the region.
This fantastic excursion starts when you are picked up from Reykjavik in the morning. You'll meet your group and a friendly, local guide who is trained to make your adventure as safe as possible. Once you're all gathered, you'll begin the 40-minute drive from the capital to the Reykjanes peninsula, where the current erupting volcano is located.
On the drive, enjoy this scenic tour of cone-shaped volcanoes and lava fields from past eruptions as you get closer to the parking lot nearest to the crater row of Sundhnukagigar.
Please make sure to bring good hiking boots, warm clothes, and a bottle of water for this excursion, and keep in mind there is a lack of infrastructure in the area.
On November 20th, 2024, the latest eruption started in the Reykjanes peninsula, and red-hot lava started erupting at a furious volume. This is the 10th volcanic eruption in the region in the last four years, after 800 years of laying dormant.
The crater row has erupted again and again regularly since the first eruption happened in 2021. After getting as good of a view of the ongoing eruption and hiking the remains of the past volcano eruptions, you will head back to the bus to visit other highlights of the Reykjanes peninsula.
Some of these sites are cultural, such as the abandoned shacks of fishermen from past centuries and the country's oldest lighthouse, Reykjanesviti. This feature stands precariously on the edge of a crumbling cliff and is surrounded by many bird colonies.
Other attractions are great examples of geological and geothermal forces, such as the Bridge Between the Continents, which divides the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, the large lake of Kleifarvatn with its unique hot springs, and the mud pit of Gunnuhver. At Gunnuhver, you can learn all about a vengeful ghost who haunts this area, trapped in the geothermal steam.
After this incredible experience, seeing the smoke and lava pouring out of the ground from a distance, you will get back on your comfortable bus and head back to Reykjavik, where you will be conveniently dropped off at your designated bus stop near your accommodation.
Don't hesitate to take this exciting tour to see the current eruption and the aftermath of the other volcanic eruptions and traverse the unique sites of the Reykjanes peninsula. Check availability by choosing a date.
