Daily itinerary
Day 1 - Fire | Into the Volcano
Today, you'll have the unique opportunity to explore inside a volcano. Þríhnúkagígur is the only volcano in the world where visitors can take a lift and safely descend into the now empty magma chamber.
You will meet your guides at Bláfjöll, the Blue Mountains, just a short drive from Reykjavík city. Your guides will lead you on a hike through the lava field to the lift itself, which sits by the 115 feet (35 meters) high cinder cone.
As you rise in the lift, you will see just how barren the landscape surrounding you is; there is no sign of civilization, only fields of moss-covered rocks and ashy peaks in the distance.
Then the descent will begin. The sky above will become a distant chink of light, and no sound can be heard except the scraping of the lift's cage against the craggy rocks of the chamber and water dripping down from the entrance.
Another world will start to appear before you as you venture further down the crater, ultimately landing at the bottom. There are icicles of rocks, and the volcano's walls are colored indigo and bronze due to the temperature of the lava which flowed through these halls thousands of years ago.
Once you've explored the vast chamber of this dormant volcano, you'll ride the lift back up, hike again through the lava field, and be on your way to your next adventure.
Day 2 - Water | Snorkelling Between Continents
Now it is time to face the element of water with a snorkeling tour in the Silfra fissure. Start by making your way to Þingvellir National Park, one of the three sites that make up the Golden Circle sightseeing route.
The park is a unique geological wonder as it is located in a rift valley between two continental plates that are slowly moving apart. Silfra fissure opened in 1789 after an earthquake caused by the shift of these tectonic plates.
Throughout the centuries, Silfra is filled with melted glacial water, which traveled underground through the porous lava fields in the region. This long filtration process has made the water in Silfra crystal clear, allowing snorkelers to see the bottom of the ravine, caves, holes, and, most importantly, incredible blues, green and yellow colors.
After meeting your guide at the parking lot of Silfra, you will be given a dry suit, so you don’t have to fear the cold glacial water. However, participants still need to be comfortable in the water and be able to swim. Once you are all geared up, you’ll take a short walk to the water and immerse yourself in the fantastical underworld of Silfra.
The experience is one of a kind; you’ll feel weightless and float effortlessly as the gentle current takes you along the ravine. The unreal world that opens up beneath you will surely leave you mesmerized. Aside from fantastical colors, you will also see strange spaghetti-like algae reminiscent of something out of a fantasy novel.
After you’ve emerged from the water, you’ll bid farewell to the guide and be on your way to explore the rest of the Golden Circle.
Day 3 - Ice | Hiking up a Glacier
Nestled under the great Vatnajökull glacier is the Nature Reserve of Skaftafell, an area known for its stark natural contrasts of luscious forests, black sands, and glistening glacier tongues. Today, you’ll embark on a hike up one of these outlet glaciers, accompanied by a professional glacier guide.
You’ll meet this guide at the Skaftafell visitor’s center, and after short introductions, they will run through the basic principles of glacier hiking with you. Before heading out to the ice, you’ll then be equipped with all the necessary tools needed, such as crampons and an ice ax.
Your guide will lead you up the glacier and across the white expanse. Along the way, your guide will tell you about the formation of glaciers and the dangers they face due to climate change. You’ll witness periwinkle ice ridges and get to taste the clean glacial water that runs down in shallow crevasses.
Standing on top of the ancient ice and breathing in the crisp mountain air is an experience you will surely never forget. Surrounding you is nothing but green hills, blue mountain peaks, and pearly-white glaciers.
After the tour, you can further explore the stunning Vatnajökull National Park with its striking waterfalls, jet-black beaches, and gorgeous glacier lagoons.
