You’ll then embark on the ‘Silver Circle’ sightseeing route, second to the Golden Circle only in name, to marvel over waterfalls, historic villages, and the highest-flowing hot springs in Europe.
During this breathtaking excursion, you’ll also reach the little-known nature pools known as the Husafell Canyon Baths. They are immersed right in a valley on the verge of the Highlands, geothermally heated and surrounded by spectacular landscapes, so remember your swimsuit!
You’ll spend the night in the fascinating town of Borgarnes before spending your second day touring the other incredible sites of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Day 1 - Silver Circle and Husafell Canyon Baths
Your adventure begins when you board the bus in Reykjavik and set out on your travels into west Iceland. You’ll pass beautiful coastlines, dramatic mountains, and serene countryside, stopping off for refreshment, before reaching the first of your many incredible sites of the day, Deildartunghver.
This is the highest flowing hot spring in Europe and provides a breathtaking window into the earth’s geothermal power. It sits adjacent to a spa, but don’t be envious of those entering, considering you’ll have your own hot pool experience later.
After your time here, you’ll drive the short distance to the twin waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Despite the fact that you can walk between them in minutes, they contrast dramatically. Hraunfossar is gentle and wide, surrounded by birch trees, whereas Barnafoss is wild and rapid, rushing down a narrow canyon.
You’ll next head to Husafell, a large farm and historic church estate with magnificent surroundings that include abundant forests and towering mountains. You’ll marvel over Langifoss, a serene waterfall, before moving to the Husafell Canyon Baths. Admission to these gorgeous hot springs, which are immersed in a dramatic valley, is included in the price.
As you bask in these naturally occurring, healing waters, you’ll be revitalized from your adventures of the day, and energized for those ahead.
Once you are fully recharged, you’ll head to your next destination, the quaint village of Reykholt. Though small, it boasts incredible history, being home to one of Iceland’s most legendary people, Snorri Sturluson, a chieftain, poet, and historian.
Finally, you’ll get to Borgarnes, one of Iceland’s earliest settlements and a place with amazing coastal views. When here, you’ll be free to enjoy the town, find a spot for dinner, and retire at your welcoming hotel.
Day 2 - The Snaefellsnes Peninsula
On the second day of this amazing adventure, you’ll set off to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Ninety kilometers long, you’ll marvel over all of the sites on both its coasts and the magnificent range of mountains that divide them.
Your first major destination is the seal-watching beach of Ytri-Tunga, a colony that can reliably be seen year-round hauling out on the rocks offshore and splashing around in the waters. After watching these gorgeous creatures, you’ll continue along the southern coast to a historic black church in the abandoned hamlet of Budir, one of the most charming yet lonely spots in the country.
From Budir, you’ll be able to see the twin-peaked subglacial volcano of Snaefellsjokull, which will dominate the scenery from here on. This mesmerizing feature has inspired artists such as Jules Vernes and Halldor Laxness and is said to have mystical powers by believers inlay lines.
You’ll enter Snaefellsjokull National Park, which surrounds the glacier, after a stop at Arnarstapi, a village with stunning coastal geology. Snaefellsjokull is far from the only feature in this area, as you’ll discover as you walk up to the magnificent basalt plug of Londrangar. Here, you’ll discover not only enormous sea towers but thousands of seabirds nesting.
Another site in the park is Djupalonssandur, a black sand beach with four lifting stones used by fishermen for centuries to test their fitness for the trials of the seas.
You’ll then move along the northern coast of the peninsula, out of the park, and through some scenic villages until you reach your major final site of the day. Kirkjufell is a magnificent standalone peak named the church mountain in Icelandic, but it is familiar to Game of Thrones fans as the mountain shaped like an arrowhead. You’ll be able to witness it from its adjacent waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss.
After this incredible two-day adventure, you’ll be whisked back to Reykjavik, which is full of unforgettable new memories!
