Summary
Description
The Holaskjol Highland Center is a fantastic place to stay in the Southern Icelandic Highlands, with private cabins and sleeping bag accommodations to cater to many travelers. Those eager to go on highland hikes and see the untouched wilderness of Iceland's interior will love their stay here.
Location & Nearby
Located off a remote highland road, far from civilization, and accessible only by 4X4, the Holaskjol Highland Center is far off the beaten track. The accommodation is 38 miles (61 kilometers) from the nearest town, Kirkjubaejarklaustur, and 134 miles (217 kilometers) from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik.
This remote location puts the Holaskjol Highland Center on the cusp of many beautiful highland areas. For example, it sits next to the Eldgja lava field, a millennium-old eruption site that contains the world's longest volcanic canyon.
This part of the Highlands is also home to Huldufoss waterfall, just 164 feet (50 meters) from the accommodation.
Landmannalaugar is 24 miles (39 kilometers) away, where you can marvel over rhyolite mountains, embark on diverse hiking trails tailored for different skill levels, and dip in wild hot springs.
This site is also the beginning point of the world-famous Laugavegur hiking trek, which heads through amazing landscapes over four to eight days to the beautiful valley of Thorsmork.
The wilderness of the Icelandic Highlands is beautiful and untouched throughout, with towering mountains, enormous glaciers, and dramatic lava fields.
Because of its remote location, you'll want to stock up before arriving at the Holaskjol Highland Center. Luckily, you can do this at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Though small, this town has groceries and a gas station.
If you are detouring to the Holaskjol Highland Center from a Ring Road adventure, you'll find more amenities in Vik, 51 miles (82.5 kilometers) southwest.
Facilities & Amenities
There are four cabins at the Holaskjol Highland Center, three of which can accommodate four in sleeping bag accommodation and one of which can accommodate six.
The four-person cabins are close to the center and have beautiful rural views, private kitchens, and private bathrooms, though the showers are located in another building.
The six-person cabin is called Langisjor and boasts an even more remote location - you must cross rivers to reach it. Though all the accommodation at Holaskjol Highland Center is far off the beaten track, Langisjor is particularly appealing for those eager to escape all signs of humanity.
The most affordable accommodation at Holaskjol Highland Center is sleeping bag accommodation in a two-floor mountain lodge, which can sleep up to 61 people. Those hiking the Highlands on a budget will find no better choice.
This space's bathrooms, dining room, and kitchen are all communal. You are also welcome to use the outdoor patio, perfect for dining under the midnight sun in midsummer.
The accommodation staff can recommend local hiking trails and tell you about the history and folklore of the surrounding landscapes. Despite its remote location, Wi-Fi is free and fast throughout the Holaskjol Highland Center.
