Description
Akureyri Backpackers is a premier hostel in Akureyri, the capital of the North. Whether you are looking for a sociable dorm, private bunks for your group, or your own room, this budget accommodation is excellent for any North Iceland holiday.
Location & Nearby
Akureyri Backpackers is located in the heart of Akureyri, on one of the main streets of Hafnarstraeti. Nearby, you'll find restaurants, bars, supermarkets, souvenir shops, and several attractions.
The Akureyri Art Museum, where you can immerse yourself in the region's culture, is just 558 feet (170 meters) from the hostel. Directly opposite this building is the striking Akureyrarkirkja church, famous for its dramatic architecture and size.
Another breathtaking building in Akureyri, the Hof Cultural and Conference Center, is less than half a mile (550 meters) north. This site sits at Akureyri's beautiful harbor, where you can admire fantastic views of Eyjafjordur fjord and embark on whale-watching tours.
Eyjafjordur is home to many species that can be reliably spotted, the most common being humpback whales and white-beaked dolphins. Puffins frequent the waters in summer.
For those more interested in flora than fauna, the Akureyri Botanical Gardens is half a mile (900 meters) from Akureyri Backpackers.
Because it is the biggest town in North Iceland, Akureyri is the best place to embark on various tours, adventures, and sightseeing trips. Many of the region's operators can pick you up from the hostel to embark on these.
The Diamond Circle is particularly notable, as the sightseeing route covers a range of natural attractions. Godafoss and Dettifoss waterfalls, 21 miles (34 kilometers) and 94 miles (151 kilometers) along this route, are both breathtaking, with the latter being the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
You can also visit the beautiful Lake Myvatn area and its many geological wonders, 49 miles (78.5 kilometers) away.
For those who like adventure, horseback riding and rafting are popular North Iceland activities. For those eager to ski in Iceland, the Hlidarfjall ski slopes are 4.5 miles (7.5 kilometers) west of Akureyri Backpackers.

With 102 beds over three floors, Akureyri Backpackers has plenty of room for travelers. Those who want privacy can find double rooms, family rooms with a double bed and bunk bed, and rooms for up to six with a mix of bunk beds, single beds, and a double bed.
