Hlid Huts
Description
Summary
Description
The Hlid Huts are a set of beautifully positioned, rustic cabins in the landscapes of volcanic north Iceland. They provide a fantastic choice of accommodation for those seeking an affordable, simple escape into this country’s stunning nature while visiting the region or embarking on a Ring Road adventure.
Location & Nearby
The Hlid Huts have a fantastic location in the lava landscapes around Lake Myvatn. This area is North Iceland’s most spectacular and beloved due to the diversity of things to see. The waters are breathtaking due to their abundant flora, thriving birdlife, and unique geology. Basalt pillars rise from the surface, formed by volcanic activity over the past centuries, and unusual green pseudocraters line the banks.
By traveling 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) in different directions, you can reach two local attractions, Dimmuborgir and Namaskard. Dimmuborgir is a lava fortress with countless towers and caves, one of which has the hot spring of Grjotagja. This beautiful site featured in Game of Thrones. Namaskard is a stark, lifeless mountain pass that contrasts with the verdant nature of Myvatn dramatically. Here, you’ll find a row of hissing fumaroles pouring geothermal gasses into the sky.
Lake Myvatn is on the Diamond Circle sightseeing route, the other features of which are easy to reach. Godafoss waterfall is just 30 miles (49 kilometers) away and is as fascinating historically as it is naturally beautiful. Drive for 34 miles (54 kilometers), and you’ll get to Husavik, a whale-watching capital of the world. Throughout summer, you are almost guaranteed to see Humpback Whales and potentially a range of other creatures on tours from here.
Dettifoss and Asbyrgi are 43 miles (70 kilometers) and 51 miles (82 kilometers) from the huts. The former is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, while the latter is a vast canyon shaped like a horseshoe and filled with birch forests. Both are breathtaking to beyond and present some excellent hiking opportunities. Akureyri, the capital of the north, is 52 miles (83 kilometers) away.
You can find amenities such as groceries and restaurants in Akureyri and Husvik. The former, however, is much more populous, so it offers far more.
